We are now looking for master students within mechanical engineering that are interested in doing their thesis project at our Compaction & Concrete Placement Department at Husqvarna Construction!
Plate compactors are used to flatten the ground to obtain a certain grade of uniformity and hardness. The ground could be soil, asphalt or gravel, and there are different compactors for different applications. The bottom plate, also referred to as the base plate, is the main source of vibrations and is also the primary focus when it comes to plate compactors.
For the compactor to be as efficient as possible, it is important that the mass distribution and parameters such as centrifugal force and operating frequency of the machine are optimized to be best suited to the type of substrate being compacted. To achieve this, one must be able to capture the behavior of the substrate (e.g. gravel or sand) as close as possible. A good, and timely, way to capture this is to gather as much data as possible and train a Machine Learning algorithm. However, gathering data includes lot of physical tests, including measuring the machine’s acceleration and ground stiffness, after presumed number of passes, which is expensive. An alternate method is to simulate the compaction process with a Discrete Element Method (DEM) and validate it against test measurements, which then gives us the opportunity to gather data by virtually simulating the process of compaction under different conditions, which later can be used to train the ML model for the ground substrate dynamics.
The objective of the thesis project is to simulate the compaction process using a Plate Compactor by coupling a MBD Model with a DEM solver.
The thesis will include work such as
Develop a modular model of a compactor so that one can set the mass, centrifugal force, and frequency.
Model two different types of ground types (gravel, sand) as small particles in a DEM solver.
Implement a model of an existing machine and validate the model against physical test measurements.
Simulate several different cases once the model is validated, so that the results can be used to train an ML Model.
Proper area of education
Master in Mechanical Engineering or another relevant field.
