Summary/Objective 

The Marketing Specialist contributes to the City’s communications, marketing, and public engagement objectives through the creation of written, graphic, photographic, video, web, and social media content. This position works with City departments and divisions to prepare clear, timely, and accurate communication materials that promote City services, programs, projects, and events. The role assists with website and digital content updates, promotional materials, publications, and community outreach activities while helping maintain brand consistency and effective public communication. 

Essential Functions 

Content Creation and Multimedia Production.  

  • Creates written, graphic, photographic, video, and social media content to inform and engage the public regarding City programs, services, events, initiatives, and operations. 
  • Produces and edits promotional and informational materials for print and digital use, including graphics, photos, short-form video, banners, activity guides, infographics, maps, reports, and related communication pieces.  
  • Helps ensure content is accurate, visually effective, audience-appropriate, and consistent with City brand standards. 
  • Completes multiple assignments with attention to detail, accuracy, and deadlines. 

Communications Support.   

  • Works with City departments and divisions to gather information and prepare clear, timely, and accurate communication materials for a variety of audiences and platforms.  
  • Assists with development of public-facing content that helps residents understand City services, programs, projects, and operations.  
  • Responds to routine requests for information and supports effective day-to-day communication by preparing promotional and informational materials as assigned. 

Website & Digital Content Updates.   

  • Assists with updating and maintaining content on the City’s websites and other digital communication channels to ensure information is current, accessible, user-friendly, and consistent with City standards.  
  • Posts web content, updates pages and documents, and supports digital content organization in accordance with brand standards, accessibility requirements, style expectations, and established web practices.  
  • May assist with citizen engagement tools, service request platforms, or similar digital communication channels as assigned. 

Writing, Editing, and Publication Support.   

  • Writes and edits articles, feature stories, captions, web copy, promotional materials, and related communication content in AP style and language appropriate for the intended audience.  
  • Assists with preparation and production of major organizational publications and special projects, including the quarterly and annual reports, program guides, and other communication materials. 

Social Media Campaigns.   

  • Assists with implementation of marketing, branding, promotional, and public engagement campaigns for City programs, projects, services, initiatives, and events.  
  • Develops campaign content and supports distribution across communication channels to increase public awareness and participation.  
  • Compiles and organizes basic marketing and communications data to support reporting on campaign and communication activities. 

Public Outreach & Community Engagement.   

  • Assists with outreach efforts by attending community events, staffing booths, gathering photos and video, distributing promotional materials, and supporting public-facing engagement activities.  
  • Helps ensure outreach efforts are professional, informative, and consistent with City communication objectives. 

Requirements

Required Education and Experience 

  • Bachelor’s Degree with major course work in mass communications, journalism, public relations, public administration, business, graphic design, or a related field. 
  • Three years of experience in public relations, journalism, business, design, or related field.  
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered as meeting the minimum qualifications.? 
  • Expert knowledge of computer software, including desktop publishing software, Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, web design/maintenance software and other related software programs. 

Compensation & Benefits

  • Boot, Clothing and Vehicle Allowances, if applicable.
  • City issued Cell Phone, if applicable.
  • Retirement/Pension - City employees are required by statute to contribute to the Kansas Public Employees Retirement System (KPERS). Voluntary retirement contributions are offered with Nationwide, Mission Square, and Empower KPERS 457.
  • Medical, Dental, Vision - The City offers an excellent benefits package that includes wellness, medical, vision, dental, and prescription drug benefits.
  • Paid Holidays – 10.5 paid holidays per year plus one additional floating holiday.
  • Paid Vacation - 12 to 26 days per year based on years of service.
  • Paid Sick Leave - 12 days per year.
  • Paid Parental Leave - up to 6 weeks of paid leave.
  • Education Reimbursement, Professional Development. Certifications/Licensure - The City will reimburse up to $8,000 per calendar year for tuition and fees. Professional Development funds are based on department budget. Certification/licensure may be reimbursed by the City.

Skills Required
