Summary
The Marketing Accountant I supports the accurate accounting and reporting of marketing activities by preparing journal entry support, maintaining detailed schedules, and ensuring marketing expenses, accruals, and billings are recorded timely and accurately. This role plays a key part in the month-end close process and requires a strong focus on meeting close deadlines while maintaining complete, organized, and audit-ready documentation. The position works closely with internal Marketing and Accounting teams to ensure marketing activity is properly reflected in the general ledger.
Essential Job Duties
- Independently manage assigned marketing accounting tasks and recurring close responsibilities in alignment with management expectations, established practices, and required timelines.
- Review marketing project submissions from the Marketing department for completeness and accuracy, escalating questions or inconsistencies as appropriate.
- Prepare and park journal entries in SAP related to marketing expenses, accruals, and adjustments, ensuring entries are complete, accurate, and fully supported prior to management review and posting.
- Use Microsoft Excel extensively to independently prepare detailed journal entry support, reconciliations, accrual rollforwards, variance analyses, and other supporting schedules, maintaining clear, organized, and audit-ready workpapers.
- Support the month-end close process by proactively managing assigned deliverables, meeting established close deadlines, and communicating status, risks, or issues in a timely manner.
- Apply actual expenses paid by Accounts Payable to the appropriate marketing projects and identify discrepancies between estimated and actual costs, escalating non-routine or unclear items to management.
- Maintain detailed support for marketing accruals and independently follow up with Marketing on unused or aged balances and outstanding items.
- Follow up with Marketing on aged or open marketing invoices and billing items, including collecting support, confirmations, or clarifications needed to resolve balances.
- Support billing and pre-bill processes by preparing required documentation, coordinating with Marketing on approvals, and providing information to the appropriate accounting teams.
- Enter or support the entry of supplier credit memos and provide payment posting or cash-application instructions to Accounts Payable or other accounting teams, escalating exceptions or unusual items to management.
- Investigate routine missing or mis-coded expenses using available information and escalate complex, unusual, or out-of-scope issues to management.
- Pull and compile documentation to support internal and external audit requests for assigned areas, escalating audit questions or requests that require accounting judgment, interpretation, or accounting position-setting to management.
- Coordinate directly with internal departments (Marketing, Accounts Payable, etc) via email, calls, and meetings to obtain information, answer routine questions, and resolve standard adjustments related to marketing activity accounting.
- Prepare periodic summaries of marketing activity and close support for management review.
- Perform special projects and ad hoc analysis as assigned.
- Regular attendance is an essential function of this position. Additional hours may be required during month-end close and peak reporting periods.
Reporting Relationships
- Reports to the Manager/Director of Cost Accounting / Operations Accounting.
- Works closely with Marketing and Accounts Payable.
- No direct vendor or customer interaction is expected.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance, or equivalent experience.
- One (1) to three (3) years of accounting experience.
- Basic understanding of general ledger accounting, accruals, and reconciliations.
- Strong Excel skills and ability to manage detailed data and schedules accurately.
- Ability to work independently on assigned tasks, manage deadlines, and maintain well-organized documentation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience supporting month-end close activities.
- Experience with ERP systems (e.g., SAP).
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit at a computer terminal for extended periods.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
- In-office presence is preferred, subject to business needs and company policy.
Compensation
Compensation Range: $55,000 - $62,000
Actual annual salary offered to a candidate will be based on a number of variables including work experience, education and skills/ achievements, and will be mutually agreed upon at the time of offer. This position is not eligible for a variable pay component as part of the hiring range.
