Market Analyst

The role

The Market Analyst will have experience within power markets and a desire to apply their knowledge and expertise to help produce novel, industry-leading research and analysis that supports customers and the wider battery energy storage sector.

On top of this, they will collaborate with Modo Energy’s data, modeling, and product teams to help plan and build data analytics products that will revolutionize workflows for others across the power industry.

Today, Modo Energy tools help organizations finance, build, benchmark, and operate battery energy storage systems. This role offers a successful candidate the opportunity to become an influential thought leader in the space by applying those tools and their own expertise to generate novel insights for the industry.

Successful candidates will be positioned to have a substantial influence on the company (and, by extension, the industry) as we expand our research and product offerings across all North American ISOs and RTOs, helping to build a product that every market participant uses.

Responsibilities

• Producing data-led, analytical insights about power markets, asset operations, and Modo Energy’s view of the future in a variety of formats - but mainly written articles and verbal presentations - to communicate high-value insights to our audience.
• Staying up to date with the latest news across markets and policy, communicating this within the company and to the wider industry.
• Engaging with active users and prospects to build a network that serves as a two-way street for information - the successful candidate will introduce people within the industry to Modo Energy or help them build trust in Modo Energy’s insights and offerings, and will lean on those industry connections to learn about key topics in power markets as they arise.
• Collaborating with teams across the business, to ensure that all aspects of the organization are pulling in the same direction to deliver value across all aspects of product and customer-facing endeavors.
• Acting as a key component of Modo Energy’s growing New York office, supporting operations and new hires, and helping to establish office culture.

• 2+ years of professional working experience in power systems, power markets, energy trading, energy infrastructure finance, or energy policy.
• In-depth knowledge of how the electricity system works and how markets are cleared - preferably with some experience in understanding how battery energy storage systems operate - in any of the North American ISO/RTO markets.
• Excellent quantitative and analytical skills. You’ll be relied upon to discover, explore, visualize, and communicate trends and patterns you find in numerical data, in ways that provide value to our users.
• Experience in writing clearly and concisely - to distill and communicate complex topics into accessible, jargon-free language.
• Strong critical thinking skills. At Modo Energy, you will have the platform to become an influential thought leader within the renewable energy space - but you’ll need to be able to develop your own thoughtful opinions, and ask insightful questions of those around you (internally and externally).
• Strongly preferred:
  • Experience carrying out complex data analysis in Python.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Mechanical/Chemical/Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related quantitative field
  • Knowledge of the fundamentals of power flow and price formation in a nodal electricity market.
  • Familiarity finding and working with ISO/RTO data products.

Important Details

• We are an in-person company that values collaboration and team culture. Everyone works in the office Tuesday through Thursday, with flexibility to work from home or the office on Mondays and Fridays.
• Salary range for this position is $100,000 - $150,000.
