Stantec has an immediate need for a part-time or full-time Marine Biologist to join our North Atlantic Marine Resources program. The successful candidate will support senior staff on both small- and large-scale multi-discipline projects with a high degree of technical complexity and a significant marine focus. This support would include projects involving aquatic restoration/remediation, transportation infrastructure, offshore wind, offshore oil and gas, and port/harbor and waterfront development. Work would include sediment sampling, field surveys, natural resource monitoring, habitat assessments, baseline data collection and data management, statistical analyses, technical report writing, drafting permit application documents, and desktop analysis for a variety of marine projects.
Your Key Responsibilities
Support components of technical marine resource projects including:
- Field work, travel, and work in variable conditions
- Collection of water, sediment, and tissue samples for contaminant analysis
- Literature reviews, research, and technical writing
- Data management and quality assurance
- Preparing environmental impact assessments and marine species/habitat consultations (e.g., Essential Fish Habitat Assessments, ESA Section 7 consultations, Biological Assessments, and Environmental Assessments)
- State and federal permitting (State of Maine experience preferred)
- Identifying freshwater and/or marine fish and invertebrate species
- Intertidal and subtidal habitat and substrate mapping and assessment
- Acoustic telemetry
- Dive surveys
Your Capabilities and Credentials

- Expertise in marine biological resources
- Expertise in sediment collection for contaminant analysis
- Strong social skills and ability to communicate across a broad range of audiences/technical backgrounds.
- Trained Protected Species Observer
- SCUBA certification and scientific diving experience
- HAZWOPER 40-hour certification
- Working understanding of policies and procedures for HSSE, including client-specific training (as required).
- Working knowledge of field sampling techniques
- Must have the willingness to learn new skills while conducting field work in rural settings and flexibility in undertaking work assignments and work independently for long hours in the field as necessary.
- Skilled at technical writing
- Experience with federal and state consultations and permitting/authorizations pertaining to marine resources and habitats
- Exhibits a strong attention to detail
- Conscientious, organized, and disciplined
- Open-minded and curious; shows an ability to focus on possibilities, not pre-conceived solutions
- Enthusiastic, with a positive outlook and a sense of humor
- Builds and maintains productive professional and personal networking relationships within their technical team and Business Center.
- Proficient in MS Office applications
- Must have a good driving record and valid driver’s license
- Experience with driving boats, trailers, and/or ATV is an asset
Education and Experience
- Minimum of Bachelor of Science in marine biology, aquatic biology, fisheries, marine science, wildlife biology, or a related discipline from a recognized university.
- Minimum of 2-5 years’ experience, which must include technical environmental and marine projects. Environmental consulting experience preferable.
