What is the focus of the role?

The Marine Network Senior Engineer shall have extensive industry experience on all technical matters around submarine cable operations and maintenance and shall have a minimum of 5 years in the submarine cable industry. The role shall be considered a subject matter expert in various aspects of O&M not limited to: leading and making sound decisions in difficult and complex situations throughout the course of an operation, provide recommendation on effective cable protection solutions post repair, pursue cable damage claim, ability to work effectively with system supplier, ship operators, vendors, authorities, other industry seabed users, etc. The incumbent shall have previously demonstrated an ability to challenge and overrule System Suppliers on complex matters.

What you’ll do

In the event of any fault located anywhere within a Cable System, the Marine Network Senior Engineer shall determine the fault location where the System NOC/Landing Party is unable to, but otherwise signing off a proposed fault location prior to mobilisation of repair assets.

Whilst the System NOC may seek System Supplier guidance, the Network Senior Engineer's role is to validate this, being an industry expert, and challenge the System Supplier as required. Ideally having acquired past field working experience and knowledge.

  • Take a long-term view of holistic O&M applicable to Cable Systems, making proactive recommendations as necessary to minimise future downtime and outage.

  • Review all proposed new-built cable crossings and assess using GIS tools whether acceptable in consideration of the ease of long-term maintenance of our subsea cable. To maintain a crossing matrix table to track the status of all cable crossings, update and maintain RPL records after completion of crossings.

  • Planning and controlling marine repairs, liaison with agents in relation to Guard Boat deployments and all local / regional authorities, deployment, and control of AIS (Asset Identification System), training of NOC and Field staff in use of AIS.

  • Ensure subsea network assets are deployed in a timely and effective way, and that all designs comply with customer, technical, regulatory, and financial requirements.

  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and the development of subsea practice standards, by contributing to process and/or methodology improvements to enhance the productivity and quality of maintenance work.

About You

We're looking for someone who has experience/skills in…

  • Appropriate Technical Certification and/or Engineering qualifications.

  • Established experience with marine operations and maintenance.

  • Ability to meet physical and functional certification for Telstra onboard ship representation.

  • Coordinator of cable repair ships, cable stations and NOC during cable or repeater repairs.

  • Experience in assessing MOP’s (Method Of Procedure) prepared by ship operators for marine operations.

  • Experience and/or understanding in the following: Digital Coherent Optical TechnologyCOTDR (Coherent Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) Testing and InterpretationTDR (Time Domain Reflectometer) Testing and InterpretationDWDM

  • Interest and aptitude with subsea cable Operation and Maintenance.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Outstanding communication skills and, can collaborate and influence.
