The Role
Own and improve quality across switchboard/switchgear manufacturing: inspection/testing, FAI/PPAP, SPC, FMEA, NCR/CAPA management, root-cause investigations, document control, QMS (ISO 9001) maintenance, and supplier/customer quality support.
Summary Generated by Built In
Butcher Power Products (BPP) designs and manufactures mission‑critical and industrial power solutions for essential infrastructure nationwide. Headquartered in Sacramento, CA, our teams collaborate closely across engineering, manufacturing, and operations to build reliable, high‑quality systems and take pride in delivering work that truly matters.
Job Summary:
The Manufacturing Quality Engineer owns conformance throughout Butcher Power Products’ switchboard and switchgear build process, from incoming material inspection at fabrication through final test and customer acceptance of assembled products. This includes owning the nonconformance and corrective action process (NCR/CAPA), verifying that as-built documentation matches the physical build, and maintaining document control and audit-readiness for the QMS. This role applies core quality engineering disciplines (FMEA, root cause analysis, FAI, PPAP) within a UL 891/NEMA-governed electrical equipment environment, working hand-on with manufacturing, product engineering, and the quality team to eliminate defects before they reach mission-critical customers. It is a high-influence position, setting the quality strategy for new product introductions, leading root cause investigations on the floor, and guiding quality inspectors and technicians as the team grows.
Key Responsibilities:
Inspection & Testing:
- Develop and maintain inspection and testing plans for new and existing products.
- Establish new inspection methods, frequencies, and acceptance criteria.
- Perform First Article Inspections (FAI) and prepare FAI reports.
- Support PPAP documentation and submissions.
- Conduct Measurement System Analysis (MSA) and Gauge R&R studies.
Process Quality:
- Develop and maintain process FMEAs, control plans, and inspection criteria for new and existing product lines.
- Implement and monitor Statistical Process Control (SPC) for key manufacturing processes.
- Conduct Cpk/Ppk capability studies, driving corrective actions when targets are missed.
- Identify and support process improvement projects to reduce scrap, rework, and cycle time, and implement controls to sustain them.
- Support new product introduction (NPI) with quality planning.
Problem Solving & Corrective Action:
- Own the Non-Conformance Report (NCR) process end-to-end: opening, tracking, material disposition, root cause analysis facilitation, corrective action assignment, and closure verification.
- Maintain the NCR log and perform trend analysis to identify systemic and repeat issues.
- Lead recurring cross-functional NCR discussions, to facilitate closure of open items, alignment on dispositions, and the completion of actions. Communicate NCR information to production staff regularly for visibility.
- Lead root cause analysis investigations using 8D, 5-Why, Fishbone, and other methodologies for internal nonconformances and production issues, owning corrective and preventive action (CAPA) through closure.
- Support Supplier Quality Engineer for investigations pertaining to customer complaints, SCARs, or warranty claims.
Document Control & QMS Maintenance:
- Maintain and continuously improve the site's ISO 9001 quality management system.
- Support internal audits, external audits, and UL inspections by maintaining audit-ready documentation and inspection traceability records.
- Own document control for the QMS — procedures, work instructions, forms, and records, including creation, revision, retention, and maintenance.
- Oversee the calibration program for inspection, measuring, and test equipment in manufacturing.
- Compile manufacturing quality and QMS inputs in preparation for Management Reviews for the Quality Director.
Design & Engineering Quality Interface:
- Support development of new electrical distribution products by creating inspection plans, control plans, and first-article inspection criteria with product and manufacturing engineering.
- Participate in design review meetings as the Quality representative to ensure engineering drawings and specifications are manufacturable and inspectable.
- Review engineering change requests for quality impact and support approval decisions.
- Log and track production redlines as NCRs; ensure redlines are evaluated and closed before incorporation into as-built documentation.
- Verify as-built documentation matches the physical build prior to shipment.
Customer Quality Support (with Supplier Quality):
- Partner cross-functionally with and the Supplier Quality Engineer and customer-facing teams to balance quality, cost, and delivery.
- Provide internal quality data and documentation to support customer submissions and inquiries led by the Supplier Quality Engineer.
- Support root cause investigations and correctives action for customer issues or warranty claims tied to internally built products.
- Contribute build-quality data and support customer quality reviews and meetings.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, or Manufacturing).
- 3+ years of quality engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Working knowledge of ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems.
- Proficiency in core quality tools: FMEA, control plans, SPC, root-cause analysis, and 8D (or equivalent structured problem-solving).
- Ability to read and evaluate engineering drawings, schematics, and GD&T callouts,
- Hands-on experience using inspection and metrology equipment.
- Experience with document control and procedure development.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent cross-functional communication — comfortable driving a root-cause conversation with production, engineering, and suppliers in the room.
Preferred:
- ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE), or Certified Quality Auditor (CQA), or Certified Quality Technician (CQT).
- Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt.
- Experience with UL-listed product manufacturing.
- Experience in electrical equipment, switchgear, or panel manufacturing.
- Experience with Minitab or similar statistical software.
- Familiarity with PPAP and APQP processes.
- Experience with ERP/MRP systems, particularly Microsoft Dynamics 365 (D365).
- Experience leading or supporting ISO 9001 or similar internal/external audits.
