Description
As a Manufacturing Engineer supporting Flexible Fabrication, you will enable low- to medium-volume production of metal components and assemblies-from prototype development through production readiness. You will drive process improvements, streamline digital workflows, and proactively support the value stream to meet on-time delivery requirements for parts and key deliverables.
Success in this role requires strong technical judgment, hands-on manufacturing experience, and the ability to collaborate effectively across Product Engineering, Application Engineering, and Pontiac Metal Center Flexible Fabrication operations.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead end-to-end manufacturing execution for assigned Flexible Fabrication parts and assemblies, from manufacturability reviews and process definition through prototype builds, validation, production-intent transition, and handoff to Pontiac Metal Center.
  • Develop and optimize processes involving laser cutting, sheet-metal forming, and bending. Support material procurement, dimensional verification, joining applications, tooling and fixture design, and shipping activities in collaboration with DREs, Application Engineers, Pontiac Metal Center, and Flexible Fabrication operations.
  • Resolve non-routine technical issues related to product design, manufacturing equipment, and part quality using sound engineering judgment and structured problem-solving methodologies.
  • Lead continuous-improvement initiatives focused on process standardization, digital workflow optimization, automation, and operational efficiency.
  • Define manufacturing process requirements, timing, cost, quality controls, and resource needs for new programs.
  • Support engineering changes, complete required manufacturing deliverables, and ensure production readiness.
  • Mentor less-experienced engineers, support technical demonstrations and lab tours, and help expand Flexible Fabrication's technical capabilities.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Two or more years of experience in manufacturing engineering, advanced manufacturing, automation, launch execution, or prototype-to-production engineering.
  • Experience working directly with manufacturing operations, suppliers, and cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Strong technical problem-solving, project management, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments independently and remain accountable for results.
  • Ability to work regularly in manufacturing and laboratory environments.
  • Ability to travel periodically to GM facilities, suppliers, and manufacturing partners.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in automotive manufacturing, Body-in-White, sheet-metal fabrication, metal center operations, or low-volume production environments.
  • Hands-on experience with laser cutting, press-brake forming, automated bending, tube processing, welding, fastening, or fabrication tooling.
  • Experience supporting prototype builds and production-intent hardware development.
  • Knowledge of Design for Manufacturability (DFM), GD&T, PFMEA, Control Plans, and dimensional validation processes.
  • Experience with Teamcenter, CAD/CAM systems, TruTops Boost, and TruBend software.
  • Experience with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, DFSS, Red X, or other structured problem-solving methodologies.
  • Experience developing digital workflows, standardized work documentation, data dashboards, or manufacturing execution tools.
