The Manufacturing Engineer – Controls is responsible for designing, programming, troubleshooting, and optimizing automation and control systems that support safe, efficient, and reliable manufacturing operations. This role serves as a technical expert for PLCs, HMIs, electrical controls, instrumentation, and automated production equipment while partnering with Operations, Maintenance, Quality, and Engineering teams to drive continuous improvement and equipment reliability.
This position reports to the Engineering Manager, is part of the Engineering team located in Deland, FL and will be an on-site role.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
- Design, program, test, and support PLC-based control systems for manufacturing equipment and production processes. Support existing custom automation equipment and new product introductions, equipment qualifications, and process transfer activities.
- Troubleshoot electrical, instrumentation, automation, and controls-related issues to minimize downtime and improve equipment reliability. Determine innovative solutions to solve challenging problems.
- Lead automation projects including equipment upgrades, new equipment installations, and process improvement initiatives.
- Develop and maintain electrical drawings, control narratives, equipment documentation, and standard operating procedures. Develop, validate, and document manufacturing processes, work instructions, and standard operating procedures.
- Support continuous improvement efforts through root cause analysis, Lean Manufacturing principles, and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
The essential requirements of the job include:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related technical discipline. 3+ years of experience supporting manufacturing, controls engineering, production engineering, or continuous improvement initiatives within an industrial or regulated environment.
- Experience programming and troubleshooting PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, servo systems, and industrial automation equipment.
- Working knowledge of electrical design, industrial networking, instrumentation, and control system architecture.
- Experience reading and creating electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, P&IDs, and technical documentation. Experience utilizing continuous improvement methodologies such as Lean Manufacturing, Kaizen, 5 Whys, Value Stream Mapping, TPM, OEE, or related tools.
- Demonstrated experience supporting manufacturing operations and driving continuous improvement through problem-solving and root cause analysis methodologies.
Travel, Motor Vehicle Record & Physical/Environment Requirements:
- Ability to work in a manufacturing and industrial chemical processing environment with exposure to moving equipment, noise, and production activities.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and comply with all environmental, health, and safety requirements.
- Ability to support off-shift troubleshooting and project activities as needed.
- Ability to stand, sit, stoop, bend, walk, reach, squat, kneel, climb, push, pull and move throughout production areas for extended periods. Ability to lift, move, or carry materials, tools, or equipment up to 25 pounds, with accommodation where required.
- Occasional travel for training, project support, or supplier visits.
It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:
- Filtration, separation, bioprocessing, medical device, aerospace, or other highly regulated manufacturing environments.
- Rockwell Automation/Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Wonderware, Ignition, FactoryTalk, and other industrial automation platforms.
- Validation, commissioning, and qualification of automated manufacturing equipment within a regulated industry.
- Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, OEE improvement initiatives, and advanced data acquisition or SCADA systems.
