The Manufacturing Cost Accountant provides financial support to manufacturing operations through cost accounting, inventory analysis, financial reporting, and business decision support. This role works closely with manufacturing, sales, and finance teams to analyze production costs, inventory activity, and operational performance while ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting.

This position is responsible for supporting the completeness, accuracy, and quality of monthly, quarterly, and annual cost reporting and analysis related to inventory, labor, procurement, and manufacturing activities. The Manufacturing Cost Accountant plays an important role in helping the business understand product costs, evaluate profitability, and support informed decision-making across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

Cost Accounting & Financial Reporting

• Support monthly, quarterly, and annual cost reporting and analysis activities.
• Assist with month-end closing activities related to production inventories.
• Prepare inventory and work-in-process (WIP) adjusting journal entries.
• Reconcile inventory balances to the general ledger.
• Support other accounting projects and analyses as needed.
• Support internal and external financial audits.

Inventory Analysis & Reporting

• Prepare monthly inventory reporting, including raw materials, inventory turns, cycle times, and product line totals.
• Analyze inventory activity and support reporting requirements for management.
• Lead annual physical inventory audits and perform related reconciliations.
• Assist in maintaining accurate inventory records and reporting.

Financial Analysis & Business Support

• Review and prepare sales order quote cost workups.
• Analyze major sales projects and associated costs.
• Prepare profitability analyses and reporting for management.
• Work with production teams to analyze monthly production variances.
• Identify cost reduction opportunities and monitor progress against improvement initiatives.

Capital Project Support

• Prepare return-on-investment (ROI) analyses and related financial evaluations for capital projects.
• Monitor capital project performance and report on financial results and progress.

Special Projects

• Participate in the annual government annualization re-costing process.
• Support special accounting, reporting, and financial analysis projects as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, or a related field required.

Experience

• 0-3 years of accounting, finance, manufacturing, or related business experience.
• Internship, co-op, or professional experience in cost accounting, financial analysis, manufacturing accounting, or decision support is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Strong analytical capabilities and business acumen.
• Ability to organize, analyze, and present financial information to various levels within the organization.
• Understanding of accounting principles and cost accounting concepts.
• High attention to detail and strong problem-solving skills.
• Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
• Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
• Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to effectively handle multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Demonstrated willingness to learn and take on new challenges.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with manufacturing cost accounting, project accounting, or financial decision support through coursework, internships, or professional experience.
• Experience with Power BI or similar reporting tools.
• Familiarity with manufacturing environments and production processes.
