The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking applicants for the fixed-term one year position of Manager to Engage with high-profile donors and prospects and co-lead fundraising events in Japan. The Tokyo Development team serves as an important base for HRW’s development, fundraising, and outreach efforts in Japan and across Asia. The team is dedicated to defend the humanity’s most fundamental values and galvanize the community of supporters to make an impact on people’s lives.

In collaboration with the Tokyo office team, the Manager will lead the work on fundraising events, including the HRW’s flagship charity gala event, and relationship-building and mobilization of donors and prospects, including the Tokyo Committee, a network of close supporters.  The Manager will develop and maintain a portfolio of supporters, organize events and initiatives, and enhance both internal and external communication of the organization.

This full-time, fixed-term one year Manager position is based in Japan and reports to the City Director based in Tokyo. The successful candidate will be expected to work from the Tokyo office at least one day per week. We aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position.

Responsibilities:

1. Work in partnership with the City Director on the fundraising strategy for Japan to strengthen existing fundraising operations, expand its donor base, and explore new fundraising areas, including planned giving, and lead its implementation.
2. Manage the production and logistics of fundraising, outreach and cultivation events in Japan, including HRW's annual Voices for Justice dinner, researcher briefings, advocacy and cultivation events;
3. Manage various aspects of the Tokyo Committee, our group of volunteers who support the organization through fundraising and advocacy initiatives, including committee meetings, communications, events, projects and working closely with the committee leadership;
4. Seek and secure philanthropic commitments from a personal portfolio of individual, companies and Foundation donors and meet or exceed agreed-upon fundraising targets.
5. Work in partnership with the Creative team, Foundations team and other teams to manage the donor stewardship and impact reporting.
6. As part of the fundraising strategy, create a communication strategy for donors and work closely with the Media team, Web team, and external partners;
7. Oversee Salesforce database including producing reports and dashboard and reviewing donor gift entries;
8. Collaborate with colleagues in other cities and functions, and contribute to the department-wide conversation and initiatives where there is a chance;
9. Help manage an Associate who provides administrative support to the team;
10. Advertise, recruit, train and coordinate the work of interns; and
11. Perform other responsibilities as may be

Qualifications:

Experience: A minimum of five years of business experience is strongly preferred. Familiarity with fundraising and philanthropy landscape in Japan and APAC is preferred.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

1. A self-starter who can thrive in a highly collaborative, fast-paced environment is highly desirable.
2. Demonstrated ability in managing high-profile individual relationships and building is required.
3. Event management experience in preferably coordinating complex, large-scale events, is required.
4. Project management experience in initiating, strategizing and running a time-bound project is required.
5. Community management experience in developing, managing and expanding a vibrant community of clients and external partners is highly desirable.
6. Proficiency in both oral and written business communication in English and native-level Japanese is required.
7. Demonstrated commitment to human rights and/or international issues and the capacity to master and represent the mission and programs of HRW are required.
8. Demonstrated awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and orientations are required.
9.  Strong interest in human rights, social justice, international development, sustainability, ESG and impact investing is preferred.

Other: The flexibility to work some evenings or weekends, as needed, related to event coordination is required. Applications for this position must possess valid Japanese work authorization.  

Salary and Benefits: HRW seeks exceptional applicants and offers competitive compensation and employer-paid benefits including commuting allowance and public social and labor insurance in Japan. The annualized salary for this position will be JPY 9,000,000 – 9,900,000.
