Brief Description:
The Manager, Technical Services is responsible for leading the Technical Services department at the Asset Reliability Center (ARC), including Field Service, Parts Support, Warehouse & Inventory, and the facility's 24-hour support and response process
This position provides technical and operational leadership to ensure Patterson-UTI drilling operations and other customers receive timely support for equipment, parts, inventory, and field-service needs. The Manager will coordinate resources across assigned functions, maintain strong customer relationships, and ensure effective service from initial request through resolution.
The Manager, Technical Services will serve as a key technical resource for ARC-supported drilling equipment and is responsible for the day-today operational leadership and execution of ARC Technical Services, including developing team capability, supporting equipment reliability, maintaining effective parts and inventory support, and driving performance through appropriate KPIs, reporting, and continuous improvement.
The successful candidate will possess strong technical knowledge, leadership ability, customer focus, business judgment, and the ability to make sound decisions in a fast-paced and time-sensitive operational environment.
This role performs under the general direction of the Sr Tech Services Manager.
Detailed Description:
- Lead the ARC Technical Services department including Field Service, Parts Support, Warehouse & Inventory, and the 24-hour service-response process.
- Establish clear priorities, expectations, accountability, and performance standards for assigned personnel and leaders.
- Serve as a key technical resource for ARC-supported drilling equipment and provide or coordinate troubleshooting support for Field Service technicians, rig personnel, Production, Parts Support, and other applicable functions.
- Lead or participate in equipment-related Root Cause Analysis (RCA), corrective actions, and reliability-improvement activities in coordination with Engineering, Quality, Production, and Operations.
- Lead the Field Service organization, including technician readiness, technical capability, assignment prioritization, dispatch, documentation, customer communication, and ongoing training and development.
- Lead the Parts Support function serving Patterson-UTI drilling rigs, internal customers, and approved external customers, with expectations for timely response, accurate orders, effective communication, and appropriate escalation of critical needs.
- Oversee external parts-sales activities and ensure customer relationships, pricing, fulfillment, revenue, and profit margins support established business objectives.
- Provide leadership and oversight for Warehouse & Inventory, including receiving, storage, inventory accuracy, cycle counts, material movement, picking, shipping, and timely fulfillment of material requirements.
- Lead and maintain the ARC 24-hour response and escalation process for urgent equipment, parts, warehouse, shipping, and Field Service needs.
- Maintain working knowledge of applicable ERP and business processes supporting inventory, receiving, shipping, parts fulfillment, and Technical Services activities; ensure required transactions and records are completed accurately and timely.
- Establish, monitor, and communicate weekly Technical Services KPIs and management reporting, and use performance data to identify service gaps, staffing needs, inventory concerns, customer issues, and improvement opportunities.
- Work cross-functionally with Supply Chain, Production, Engineering, Quality, Operations, Asset Managers, Area Leadership and other stakeholders to resolve material, technical, equipment, reliability, and customer-support issues.
- Provide leadership, coaching, accountability, and professional development for assigned personnel.
- Ensure Technical Services activities comply with applicable company safety policies, Quality Management System requirements, technical standards, and established procedures.
- Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Sr. Technical Services Manager.
Job Requirements:
- Strong technical knowledge of drilling-rig equipment, repair, maintenance, troubleshooting, and Field Service activities.
- Working knowledge of top drives, mud pumps, automated catwalk systems, iron roughnecks/make-break equipment, hydraulic systems, mechanical systems, electrical systems, and related drilling equipment.
- Ability to understand engineering drawings, hydraulic and electrical schematics, Bills of Material, technical specifications, work instructions, and service documentation.
- Proven leadership ability with experience managing technical, service, warehouse, parts-support, or similar operational teams.
- Strong customer-service and business mindset with the ability to support both internal and external customers.
- Ability to think strategically, translate priorities into action plans, and make timely business-critical decisions using available information.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills with the ability to work effectively with employees, customers, rig personnel, management, and cross-functional teams.
- Ability to manage challenging situations professionally while maintaining accountability and clear expectations and to work independently and as part of a team while managing multiple priorities and time-sensitive operational requirements.
- Working knowledge of ERP systems and applicable warehouse, inventory, service, sales, and material-management processes; SAP experience is preferred.
- Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office, OKTA, ERP systems and applicable business, reporting, and technical systems.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Three (3) or more years of experience in Technical Services, Field Service, equipment repair, maintenance, or similar support of drilling-rig equipment.
- Three (3) years of Demonstrated leadership, supervision, or management experience within a technical, service, maintenance, warehouse, parts-support, or oilfield environment.
- Experience working within a formal Quality Management System.
- Valid Driver’s License and ability to meet Company vehicle eligibility requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, or a related technical discipline
- Eight (8) or more years of drilling-industry, oilfield-service, Technical Services, Field Service, or related experience.
- Experience working with or supporting drilling Operations and rig personnel.
- Experience managing Field Service technicians, technician dispatch, technical support, and technician training or qualification programs.
- Experience managing or providing leadership for warehouse, inventory, Parts Support, or service-fulfillment functions.
- Experience leading cross-functional projects involving Operations, Engineering, Quality, Production, Supply Chain, or other supporting functions.
- Knowledge of API Q1, API 8C, ISO 9001, or similar Quality Management System requirements.
- Project-management experience related to equipment repairs, upgrades, reliability improvements, or operational support.
Additional Details:
This position requires the person to be able to work in a time sensitive, high visible role and regularly travel as needed to support business units and visit work sites. It may also require extended travel to remote locations and/or overnight stay(s) during variable hours. Variable work hours include hours worked on the weekend, on holiday s, and hours to travel within and outside of the assigned region. The employee must work with an emphasis on planning, multitasking and prioritization to maximize efficiency of the team. Must be able to work closely with others and manage customer interaction in a professional manner. Ability to safely navigate work sites with occasional walking, climbing, standing, stepping, etc., during normal operating conditions (day/night, outdoor hot/cold weather) and while utilizing designated personal protective equipment (PPE).
