Summary

Direct the daily activities of the substation engineering staff. Supervise and coordinate the utilization of engineering manpower to ensure that substation power equipment and protective relay/control systems are designed, installed, tested, maintained, and operate properly. 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervises the assignment of engineering personnel and sets department goals for Substation Design.
  • Works internally with Transmission Planning, Transmission Line Engineering, Transmission Operations, Distribution Engineering and Operations, Substation Operations, Plant Operations, Major Accounts and Construction regarding the installation and maintenance of new and existing substation facilities
  • Ensures that Substation Engineering's methods and procedures are kept current with the latest and best industry safety requirements and engineering practices
  • Manages the coordination and scheduling of substation capital projects
  • Manages the investigation of electric system interruptions for proper relay and control operation.
  • Manages the technical support for the operations of all company and customer substation work
  • Manages the major substation equipment emergency inventory
  • Generates and maintains Capital and O/M budgets for the Substation Engineering department.
  • Manages the maintenance of all required technical records and computer-based programs.
  • Inspects work and checks progress of projects and documents details for performance evaluations.
  • Ensures that design and testing activities maintain uniform and safe practices.
  • Solves personnel and staffing problems

Required Qualifications for Position

  • Knowledge normally acquired through a formal engineering curriculum: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology or in other related fields.
  • Must have good planning, organizational, verbal and written communications skills.
  • High level of knowledge of electric transmission and power system operations and design.
  • General knowledge of power plant operations, rates, tariffs, State and Federal regulations and codes of conduct, and NERC and ECAR policies and Company procedures.
  • Fundamental knowledge of supervisory/managerial principles.
  • Communication and motivation skills to lead technical personnel.
  • Ability to train and develop personnel.
  • Ability to interact with customers and explain technical issues.
  • Knowledge of Capital and O/M budgeting systems.
  • Knowledge of both typical and engineering PC applications.
  • Requires the ability to respond to emergency situations and work outside the normal schedule.
  • Must be capable of explaining complex technical issues and interacting with major industrial customers.
  • Duties require both office and “field” work. Field environment can include exposure to high voltage and hazardous chemicals in industrial locations.

Preferred Additional Qualifications for Position

  • Advanced degree or Professional Engineer Certification.
  • Professional Engineer License
  • Certification as a Project Management Professional.
  • Fundamental knowledge of electrical engineering principles.
  • Specific knowledge of system configuration and operation of electric transmission and distribution facilities.
  • Knowledge of safety policies/procedures, material/supply systems, and electric/material standards.
  • Knowledge of union contracts and safety policies/procedures.

Salary Range:

$125,800.00 - $188,600.00
