Nourishing Hope is a Chicago nonprofit working to end food hunger and address its root causes. Founded in 1970, we have evolved from a traditional food pantry into a comprehensive organization providing nutritious food, social services, and mental health support to individuals and families across Chicago. 

We support the whole person with with respect, dignity, and compassion through: 

  • Five food access programs providing monthly groceries—including fresh produce, protein, grains, canned goods and other pantry staples—plus Bonus distributions offering additional food throughout the month.
  • Home delivery for older adults, homebound neighbors and neighbors living with disabilities.
  • Social services including case management, mental health counseling, job search support, domestic violence intervention, referrals and public benefits assistance (SNAP, healthcare, government forms) for anyone in need.

Each year, Nourishing Hope provides nutritious food and essential support to tens of thousands of Chicagoans. In 2025, we distributed more than 6 million pounds of food, served 50,000 neighbors, and provided more than 7,000 social services, including over 3,400 free mental health counseling sessions.

Position Summary

The Manager of Online Market primarily oversees all aspects of Online Market daily food distribution programming, including staff supervision, neighbor and volunteer engagement, operations and logistics, data tracking and reporting, and food safety and sanitation. This role acts as a liaison to all neighbors, volunteers, staff, and other stakeholders to ensure a dignified and respectful experience in alignment with Nourishing Hope’s Core Values.

Schedule and Locations

This position primarily works out of Headquarters located at 1716 W Hubbard Street, Chicago, IL with travel to other Nourishing Hope locations and to program and partner sites across Chicago, as needed, to support organizational objectives. The work schedule is Tuesday-Saturday, typically 9:00a-5:00p. This position is onsite, with a maximum of two days per week working remotely. Hours and other onsite location presence may vary based on programmatic needs.

Essential Job Functions

  • Program Standards Oversight - Oversees adherence to and execution of all relevant food distribution program standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure high-quality programming, food storage, workplace safety, and sanitation standards that adhere to organizational, state, and federal policy
  • Manager on Duty - Act as the manager on duty and point of contact for all neighbors, volunteers, staff, and other stakeholders at the site, as appropriate, ensuring an environment that reinforces Nourishing Hope’s Core Values. Is the primary point of contact for food distribution partnership relations
  • Staff Training & Supervision - Oversees training, supervision, and coaching of staff to ensure high-quality food distribution programming and partnership expansion, in alignment with SOPs. Utilizes data-informed continuous quality improvement practices to identify and test approaches to optimize programming and partnership expansion
  • Inventory & Partner Relations - In partnership with the Operations Department, oversees inventory and relationships with The Greater Chicago Food Depository, U.S.D.A., FEMA, and other external partners
  • Leadership Team Participation - Actively participates as a member of the Program Leadership Team and Nourishing Hope Leadership Team to ensure cross-team and cross-departmental alignment with organizational priorities to achieve organizational goals

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, Master’s degree preferred
  • 4+ years work experience in social services, customer service, or grocery/retail environments
  • 2+ years experience supervising and providing coaching to a team 
  • Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and ability to drive a van
  • Strong technology skills including:
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite
  • Ability to use and maintain Salesforce customer relationship management (CRM) data quality
  • An understanding of, and belief in, the importance of food security for everyone
  • Familiarity with the interconnected barriers experienced by neighbors experiencing food insecurity, including but not limited to homelessness, mental and physical health, disability, substance use, and aging-related barriers
  • Ability to obtain and maintain food service sanitation certification in accordance with municipal and state laws
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (in person, over the phone, remotely, and in writing) and the ability to navigate challenging situations with patience and professionalism 
  • Proven ability to work independently and as a member of a team, including willingness to provide staff coverage, depending on programmatic need
  • Ability to prioritize workload and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions 
  • A high level of professionalism, attention to detail, and a high degree of accuracy
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights and Saturdays 

Highly Preferred

  • Bilingual (Spanish)
  • Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and ability to drive a van 
  • Previous experience in the nonprofit or hunger relief sectors 
  • Knowledge of food safety regulations and best practices
  • Experience in Non-violent Crisis Intervention techniques

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly and lift push/pull up to 100 pounds occasionally
  • Ability to operate pallet jacks (training required, can obtained after hire) and move objects up to 3000 pounds with pallet jacks
  • Ability to work on one’s feet for most of the day
  • Ability to engage in prolonged standing and walking
  • Ability to lift, bend, crouch, reach
  • Ability to ascend or descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like
  • Operating a pallet jack (training required; can be obtained after hire)
  • Visual acuity (with correction) to operate a motor vehicle (van)
  • Ability to operate a cargo van
  • Ability to adjust focus, use depth perception, peripheral vision, and color vision to operate safely in a collaborative, physical environment
  • Ability to occasionally do sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing
  • Manual dexterity to use computer, mouse, telephone, and other standard office equipment
  • Visual acuity (with or without correction) to read documents and computer screens

Pay and Benefits

Salary: $54,000 - $60,000 per year depending on experience
