Are you passionate about how the cloud can streamline an engineering org? Do your proudest moments come from seeing engineers accomplish big things and grow their careers? If so, read on!

At Expel, we want to make security as accessible as the internet, and we know in order to do that, we have to build out a world-class software delivery platform. We've built a rock-solid foundation that our users love, but we won't stop until an intern can click a few buttons on their first day and watch as their delivery pipeline, runtime, observability, and on-call stacks automatically initialize their service scaffolding in just seconds.

We're looking for someone who loves to lead and inspire engineering teams to deliver clean, secure, and sustainable solutions. You’ll get to join a highly collaborative team that is doing great work and enjoys working with each other.

Our engineering leaders value intelligent execution over heroics, innovation through rapid iteration, and being actively inclusive and supportive. We deliver consistently, and we use data to measure quality and drive us to always get better at what we do. If this sounds like the kind of team you'd like to join, we’d love to hear from you!

What Expel can do for you

  • Drop you into the middle of a fast-growing cybersecurity-focused technology company with some of the most enthusiastic customers and engineers you’ve ever seen.
  • Place you at the helm of a team of engineers who care deeply about quality, innovation, community, and technical excellence.
  • Give you an opportunity to be a force multiplier of engineering's strategic impact on the business.

What you can do for Expel

  • Guide the daily work of up to seven platform engineers (two existing direct reports, planning to grow throughout 2024 and 2025).
  • Recruit, hire, and onboard great Software Engineers to build out the team.
  • Collaborate with engineering feature teams and stakeholders to ensure engineers can ship the most value as smoothly and quickly as possible.
  • Provide coaching and feedback to engineers. You’re passionate about understanding the people on your team and their career journeys, and you help get each person the right opportunities to advance.
  • Enthusiastically participate in team activities, even the silly ones like Kubernetes documentary watch parties.

What you should bring with you

  • 7+ years technical professional experience as an engineer, technical lead, or manager
  • Previous engineering management experience – the quality of that prior experience matters more than how long you’ve done it.
  • Engineering management or other leadership experience in an agile environment (of any methodology).
  • A passion for fostering environments optimized for healthy, productive collaboration.
  • Experience delivering cloud-based software.
  • A track record of using data to understand processes and drive continuous improvement.
  • Excellent active listening, negotiation, and robust dialogue skills across communication styles and levels and on remote/hybrid teams.
  • Ability to empower and inspire a diverse set of engineers to a common goal and appreciate individuals for their unique contributions.

How our team works together

We build and run highly collaborative teams where everyone is pulling in the same direction and is learning from each other:

  • We're a GCP shop.
  • We're big on Kubernetes.
  • We work out of a shared backlog.
  • We peer-review everything.
  • We're crazy about pair programming (but not fanatical). We strive for everyone to pair each week, where it makes sense.
  • We do weekly blame-free retros to reinforce what’s going well, so we do more of it, and surface what’s not going well, so we can do something about it. Same thing for projects and significant operational problems.

Our hiring process

We respect your time. You’ll hear from us by the end of the next business day after completing an interview.

We also have a goal that all Expletives have a great manager and have a voice in how their team is run and who runs it. It’s not the shortest process in the industry, but you’ll get to meet nearly everyone you’ll work with day-to-day and your Engineering leadership. New Expletives consistently say our interview process gave them an accurate picture of what it’s like to work here.

Here’s our 3-stage process for this position (5.5 hours total interviewing time):

  • Chat with a recruiter (30 min)
  • Video interview with hiring manager (Engineering Manager, Rosy Framework team, hiring manager for this position) (60 minutes)
    • “Virtual onsite interview” (can be scheduled contiguous or broken up, 60 minutes each):
    • Engineering leadership (VP Engineering and an Engineering Director)
    • Team member interview #1 (two members of the ‘Rosy Framework’ team)
    • Team member interview #2 (two other members of the ‘Rosy Framework’ team)
    • Customer Team Interview (Engineering Manager and Tech Lead of a feature team that’s a customer of your team).

Additional notes

The base salary range for this role is between €93,900 EUR and €136,200 EUR + bonus eligibility and equity.

We believe in paying transparently and equitably. Your salary will ultimately be based on factors such as your experience, skills, team equity, and market data. You’ll also be eligible for unlimited PTO (which we model and encourage), work location flexibility, up to 24 weeks of parental leave, and really excellent health benefits

We’re only hiring those authorized to work in Ireland. We do not currently sponsor immigration visas.

We're an Equal Opportunity Employer: You'll receive consideration for employment without regard to race, sex, color, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, protected veteran status, or on the basis of disability.
