The Buyer I is responsible for driving growth and category development for assigned product categories. This role builds strong cross functional and vendor relationships and effectively identifies new business opportunities while maximizing the existing assortment. This role is accountable for building, nurturing and driving demand for our products across ecommerce and brick and mortar. The Buyer I is adept at interpreting customer insights and utilizing the full breadth of OMNI channels to drive consumers through the purchase funnel. This position collaborates with our vendor partners and cross-functionally within the organization to launch, maintain and sustain exceptional sell through of products. It is critical to work seamlessly in a cross functional capacity to build alignment and consensus while steering the team with a strategic POV to ensure the success of the products and category. The output is a unified approach that drives demand for the product and positions Mattress Firm as the only place to shop.
Essential Responsibilities
- Responsible for all aspects of category strategy and performance, defining category potential and consistently executing toward category role in achieving overall Merchandising big rocks.
- Manage and foster growth and development of Assistant Buyer.
- Facilitate development of product assortment strategy and partner with department lead/VP on product, brand and marketing development.
- Set scorecard performance targets and report to department lead/VP of Merchandising providing key insights around trends/anomalies and plans of action when needed.
- Assist departmental leadership in vendor/supplier partnership and tactical ways of working and manage vendor onboarding and day-to-day relationships.
- Lead POD, ensuring clear briefing and communication of category goals and initiatives to XF partners and the timely and on-brief contributions of all POD members - especially around Go To Market and End-of-Life plans.
- Track innovation, trends, and customer demand and identify opportunities for category growth/optimization.
- Establish and drive product placement needs through sourcing teams(s).
- Motivate field through communications, compensation, and training strategies in partnership with Store Execution, CX, and Retail leadership teams.
- Develop product placement UX activation strategy (collection and product pages).
- Lead RFP development and decision making process, identify new Vendors/Suppliers, ensure contractual compliance for all Vendors/Suppliers within category.
- Facilitate all aspects of new product onboarding with master data, product lifestyle management, digital, marketing, and field communications.
- Spearhead all product/category promotions and pricing plans in collaboration with vendor partners and internal promo & pricing teams
- Identify needs for field communications and suppling the WHAT/WHEN/WHY and all supporting information for communications briefings.
- Serve as ""Business Review"" for all Marketing and XF deliverables pertaining to category.
- Ensure Product quality and fulfillment meet agreed upon standards.
- Complete all required training modules and certifications prior to the due date.
- Ensure all safety policies and procedures are followed to ensure a safe work environment for all.
- Communicate professionally with all internal and external contacts.
- Follow all Company policies and execute Company standards on appearance and functionality as well as appropriate brand representation.
- Communicate any concerns or issues to leadership to ensure proper efficiency of department and company operations.
- Execute team member performance improvement plans, progressive discipline, and terminations when appropriate per Company policy.

Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Business, Merchandising, or related field, or equivalent experience preferred
Professional Experience
- 4+ Years proven experience as category manager or similar role required
- 3+ Years experience in data analysis and with forecasting methods required
- Extensive experience in understanding consumer needs and the retail environment. required

$90,000-95,000
