Position Summary
The Business Development team supports the firm across a broad spectrum of new business and client relationship- building activities, including the creation of new business proposals and firm marketing materials, upkeep of the databases that track firm experience and client information, competitive and market intelligence, and coordination of client events.
The Manager, Business Development - Litigation works closely with practice leadership, the broader litigation business development team, and operational teams across the firm (e.g., PR & Communications, Digital Marketing, Events, Accounting) to develop and execute on key business development and marketing initiatives for Davis Polk’s litigation practice in Washington DC.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Typical responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Washington DC litigation practice: Develop a deep understanding of our Washington DC-based litigation practice (including civil and appellate litigation, white collar defense and investigations, and antitrust) attorney specialties, clients and specific business development and marketing needs. Collaborate with attorneys and the broader litigation business development team on the creation and implementation of strategic business initiatives.
Lead generation: Leverage relevant legal research databases and resources (e.g., Bloomberg Law, Lex Machina) to monitor, research and report on litigation filings and other opportunities for attorney outreach and client engagement.
Marketing materials: Manage and prepare content for targeted presentations, proposals, and pitch materials. Review and update print and digital marketing materials to ensure content reflects substantive strengths, accomplishments, and current activities.
Directory submissions: Manage the drafting and submission of content for numerous legal directories, awards, and related industry guides (e.g., Chambers, Legal 500, Benchmark Litigation).
Matter tracking: Manage experience database and track matters for marketing and business development purposes. Prepare tombstones and matter lists in connection with various business development opportunities.
Qualifications/Position Requirements
Knowledge of, and experience with, litigation, including civil and appellate litigation, white collar defense and investigations, and antitrust.
Experience with legal-research / legal-news databases and resources (e.g., Lexis, Lex Machina, Bloomberg Law, Capital IQ, PACER).
Excellent organizational and project management skills
Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
Ability to work confidently and collaboratively with individuals at all levels of the organization
Ability to maintain professional composure in high- pressure situations and a fast-paced, multi-authority environment
Highly motivated, responsive, and conscientious, with a commitment to delivering excellent client service
A sharp eye for detail
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Word)
Education and/or Experience
5-7 years of experience in law firm business development & marketing (litigation experience preferred)
Bachelor’s degree required (MBA, JD, or other advanced degree a plus)
Compensation
The expected base salary ranges from $175,000 - $225,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, anticipated assignment, and, where applicable, licensure or certifications obtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered. Davis Polk offers a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package.
