About the Role

The Manager of Accountability supports KIPP DC’s enterprise risk management and compliance functions and serves as a primary resource for staff across the school system on risk, policy, and compliance matters. This role leads the day-to-day execution of internal audit activities, policy development and maintenance, charter compliance, and risk reporting, working closely with and under the direction of the VP of Accountability.

Location and Type of Work

Hybrid flexibility (3 days per week onsite)

As a headquarters team that is focused on being responsive to our schools and meeting the needs of our students and families, we approach our work in a way that reflects these priorities. This position will generally work independently and not regularly interface with students, families, or school teams.  This position will primarily work from our headquarters office to maintain a connection to their colleagues and foster a sense of cross-functional collaboration. Because of the nature of this position’s work, this role allows  for hybrid flexibility and will be required to be onsite 3 days per week.

Responsibilities
The percentages for each key responsibility are estimates, and other duties may be assigned. Flexibility and responsiveness are encouraged to accommodate organizational needs.

Internal Audit (35% of time)

  • Support the VP of Accountability in designing and executing KIPP DC's annual internal audit cycle, including developing risk-based audit plans that identify internal control gaps in operational and financial processes.
  • Conduct audit fieldwork across operational areas, including testing transactions, reviewing documentation, conducting in-school observations, and evaluating the effectiveness of internal controls.
  • Prepare clear audit reports summarizing findings and  recommendations for management review and action.
  • Monitor the status of corrective action plans resulting from audit findings, following up with relevant teams to confirm implementation and escalating unresolved items to the VP of Accountability.
  • Stay current on internal audit best practices and emerging standards relevant to K-12 charter school operations to inform KIPP DC's audit approach.

Policy Development and Maintenance (25% of time)

  • Conduct an annual review of KIPP DC's internal policies, identifying gaps, redundancies, and areas requiring revision based on regulatory changes, operational trends, or identified risks.
  • Draft new policies and revise existing ones in collaboration with relevant teams, ensuring alignment with legal requirements, best practices, and KIPP DC's operating context.
  • Work across teams to review the KIPP DC staff handbook, ensuring it reflects current approved policies and is updated on an annual cycle or as needed following material policy changes.
  • Coordinate timely publication of updated policies and support communication of key changes to staff, working with the VP of Accountability to determine appropriate communication strategies.
  • Analyze trends in policy inquiries, audit findings, and compliance data to proactively recommend policy updates before risks escalate.

Charter Compliance Monitoring (20% of time)

  • Monitor KIPP DC's ongoing compliance with charter obligations and authorizer requirements, including DC PCSB's ASPIRE framework, and maintain tracking systems that reflect current status across all applicable commitments.
  • Prepare clear reports and dashboards for the VP of Accountability summarizing charter compliance status, outstanding items, and emerging risks.
  • Conduct routine monitoring of compliance with laws and regulations relevant to charter review and renewal processes, flagging material changes or risks for the VP's review.
  • Serve as the primary staff consultation resource for questions related to charter compliance, exercising judgment about when to resolve matters independently and when to escalate to the VP of Accountability.

Enterprise Risk Management Support (15% of time)

  • Support ongoing monitoring of key organizational risks across operational, financial, and select student-facing areas, including athletics, maintaining systems that allow leadership to assess risk status at a glance.
  • Analyze trends in risk data and incident reports, recommending updates to mitigation strategies or policies as patterns emerge.
  • Support the VP of Accountability in managing KIPP DC's insurance portfolio, including tracking claims, organizing renewal documentation, coordinating with brokers as directed, and partnering across teams to identify and implement improvements to risk management practices in response to claim trends and emerging risks.
