Primary Function
Set up, operate, and maintain traditional, non-computerized manual machinery (lathes, mills, grinders) to shape metal parts and transform complex blueprints into precision components through exact hand-eye coordination, shop mathematics, and accurate measuring tools.
Basic Responsibilities
- Equipment Operation: Safely set up and operate manual machine tools, including manual lathes, milling machines, drill presses, and surface grinders.
- Blueprint Interpretation: Read and interpret complex engineering drawings, technical schematics, and blueprints to determine dimensions, tolerances, and sequence of operations.
- Precision Machining: Select cutting tools and precisely calculate/adjust feeds, speeds, and depths of cut to shape raw materials into finished specialty steel components.
- Quality Assurance: Inspect parts using precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, dial indicators) to ensure strict adherence to exact quality specifications.
- Routine Maintenance: Perform preventive maintenance on manual machinery, including cleaning, lubricating, and making minor mechanical repairs or adjustments.
- Safety & Workplace Standards: Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work area following all company and industrial safety guidelines.
Position Details & Supervision
- Supervision: Works independently with minimal supervision; reports directly to the Maintenance Supervisor.
- Work Environment: Industrial manufacturing facility. Candidates must be comfortable working in environments that require appropriate PPE.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Vocational/technical school training or a completed industry apprenticeship preferred.
- 2 to 5+ years of hands-on manual machining experience in a machine shop or heavy industrial manufacturing environment.
Key Technical Skills & Capabilities:
- Manual Lathe Proficiency: Proven proficiency and hands-on experience operating a manual lathe.
- Machining Expertise: Extensive knowledge of machining techniques including turning, boring, threading, and facing.
- Technical Skills: Strong mechanical aptitude, spatial awareness, and proficiency in shop mathematics and geometry.
- Quality & Detail: Exceptional hand-eye coordination, high attention to detail, and expertise with precision measuring tools (micrometers, calipers).

Skills Required
