Position Summary

The Machinist is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining a variety of manual and CNC machine tools to manufacture, repair, and modify components in accordance with engineering drawings, customer specifications, and SMS group quality standards. This position requires strong machining skills, blueprint reading abilities, precision measurement knowledge, and a commitment to safety, quality, and productivity.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate manual and CNC machine tools to manufacture, repair, and modify components to required specifications and tolerances.
  • Read, interpret, and work from blueprints, engineering drawings, sketches, and work instructions utilizing both metric and standard (English) measurements.
  • Program, edit, and troubleshoot CNC machine programs as required to support machining operations.
  • Operate CNC vertical mills, CNC horizontal mills, CNC lathes, manual lathes, horizontal boring mills, vertical milling machines, and other machining equipment.
  • Verify machine setups, tooling, offsets, and dimensions to ensure parts meet quality and customer requirements.
  • Layout, center, and establish stock material reference lines and machining locations as required.
  • Perform precision machining operations while maintaining close tolerances and high-quality workmanship.
  • Utilize precision measuring instruments including micrometers, calipers, indicators, bore gauges, and other inspection equipment to verify dimensional accuracy.
  • Troubleshoot machining, tooling, and equipment issues to maintain production efficiency.
  • Operate shop equipment including, but not limited to, mag drills, hydraulic tubing benders, automatic band saws, automatic tapping machines, pipe threaders, drill presses, Stingray washers, and Cardinal blast cabinets.
  • Safely move materials and workpieces using overhead cranes, rigging equipment, forklifts, pallet jacks, and other material handling equipment.
  • Perform routine machine maintenance and maintain equipment in good working condition.
  • Complete all required documentation accurately, including travelers, inspection records, timecards, production reports, and shop floor paperwork in accordance with ISO standards and SMS group procedures.
  • Assist in training and mentoring less experienced employees when needed.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment while following all company safety policies and procedures.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience operating manual and CNC machine tools in a manufacturing, repair, or heavy industrial environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and machining specifications.
  • Knowledge of machining practices, tooling, feeds, speeds, and material properties.
  • Proficiency in the use of precision measuring instruments and inspection equipment.
  • Basic CNC programming and troubleshooting experience preferred.
  • Experience operating overhead cranes, rigging equipment, forklifts, and pallet jacks preferred.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining productivity and quality standards.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, and perform physical work for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift, move, and position materials and tooling in accordance with company safety guidelines.
  • Ability to work in an industrial manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, machinery, oils, coolants, and varying temperatures.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
