ABOUT THE POSITION
ResponsibilitiesWe are looking for an experienced and hands-on Lead Machine Learning Engineer to head the machine learning engineering behind our AI developer tools. In this role you will set the technical direction for our machine-learning systems, build and ship production AI features end to end, and lead and mentor a team of Machine Learning programmers.
You will join the team advancing AI-assisted coding and agentic approaches across Virtuos — creating AI agents and solutions that make our developers more productive — alongside our work, to a smaller degree, on real-time AI, game AI, and quality-engineering agents.
This is a global Virtuos role. Being based in our Kuala Lumpur office is a plus but not required. On-site presence is expected at the start, and a hybrid arrangement (three days in the office, two days from home) can be agreed after an initial on-site period. A fully remote arrangement is not offered for this role. We're happy to discuss individual circumstances and reasonable accommodations within this arrangement.
- Set and own the technical direction for the team's machine-learning systems and models.
- Architect, build and ship machine-learning and generative-AI features end to end — from data and training through evaluation, deployment and monitoring.
- Lead, mentor and grow a team of ML programmers, and define ML coding standards and best practices.
- Own model quality: define evaluation metrics and guardrails and drive a continuous-improvement process.
- Partner with producers, game teams and stakeholders to translate needs into robust machine-learning solutions.
- Identify and manage technical risks, priorities and trade-offs across projects.
- Drive applied research into emerging machine-learning and large-language-model techniques.
- Support recruitment, onboarding and the technical development of the team.
- Deep, hands-on machine-learning and deep-learning expertise, with a track record of taking models to production.
- Practical experience with large language models and generative AI, and with the modern machine learning toolchain.
- Strong programming ability in Python and at least one systems language (for example C++ or C#).
- Solid software-engineering fundamentals: architecture, performance, data structures and testing.
- Game development experience, with an understanding of game engines, tools and production pipelines.
- Proven technical leadership and mentoring, and the ability to write clear technical documentation.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Mathematics or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Excellent written and spoken English.
- Around 8+ years of engineering experience, including leading teams or projects.
- Hands-on experience with AI coding assistants such as Claude Code, Codex CLI, GitHub Copilot or equivalent (required).
Skills Required
- Strong backend engineering skills in Python (and/or another server-side language).
- Hands-on experience with AWS cloud services (compute, storage, containers and serverless).
- Experience with big-data and distributed-data processing at scale.
- Experience serving machine-learning models and working with databases, including vector/search stores.
- A solid grounding in APIs, microservices, containerization and monitoring.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines (GitLab and Horde are a strong plus; Jenkins and TeamCity a lesser plus).
- Game development experience.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent experience.
- Excellent written and spoken English.
- Around 4+ years of backend engineering experience.
- Hands-on experience with AI coding assistants such as Claude Code, Codex CLI, GitHub Copilot or equivalent.
