The Licensed Vocational Nurse – IV Safety Team (IVST) supports organization-wide vascular access quality through surveillance, maintenance, education, and quality monitoring within the LVN scope of practice. Working collaboratively with the IVST RN and interdisciplinary teams, this position promotes evidence-based practice, supports standardization of IV care, and assists with quality improvement initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS

License/Certification
Required:
Current California Licensed Vocational Nurse license
Current Basic Life Support (BLS)

Intravenous therapy certification and blood withdrawal certification
 

Education
Required: Infusion therapy education & certificate
Preferred: Ultrasound-guided PIV training

Experience
Required: One year of recent acute care experience
Preferred: Critical care, vascular access, quality improvement, or infection prevention experience

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Comprehensive knowledge of evidence-based vascular access and infusion therapy practices.

Knowledge of CLABSI prevention, vascular access maintenance, and regulatory standards.

Excellent communication and interdisciplinary collaboration skills.

Ability to analyze surveillance findings, identify trends, and recommend improvements.

Ability to independently prioritize work while maintaining excellent customer service.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Conducts daily surveillance of peripheral IVs, midlines, PICCs, and central venous access devices for compliance with organizational standards such as: dressing integrity, securement, labeling, tubing management, documentation, and ongoing clinical necessity.

Supports nurses on clinical units in their assessment of vascular access devices for dressing integrity, securement, labeling, tubing management, documentation, and ongoing clinical necessity.

Provides real-time bedside education and coaching that reinforces evidence-based vascular access practices.

Promotes standardization of IV therapy practices to improve patient safety and reduces CLABSI and other vascular access complications.

Performs vascular access maintenance interventions within scope of practice, including dressing changes, tubing management, removal of unnecessary or expired peripheral IVs, and other evidence-based interventions without replacing unit responsibility for IV maintenance.

Collects, documents, analyzes, and communicates surveillance findings to support quality improvement initiatives.  Escalates clinical findings requiring RN, provider, or vascular access specialist intervention.

Serves as a clinical consultant for difficult vascular access, assists with ultrasound-guided peripheral IV insertion and training (once competent), and recommends escalation to Midline or PICC when clinically indicated.

Collaborates with nursing leadership, Infection Prevention, Nursing Professional Development, Quality, physicians, and the PICC Team to improve vascular access outcomes.

Participates in development, implementation, and evaluation of vascular access policies, education, and performance improvement activities.

Supports a culture of patient advocacy, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and services appropriate to the population served on the assigned unit or work area. Knowledgeable of growth and development for all patient/family cultural, linguistic, spiritual, gender, and age specific needs. Able to effectively communicate and care for patient and family as reflected in the Plan for Provision of Care.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Pay Range

$30.17 -$45.26
