- Draft and answer written discovery requests.

- Prepare and argue motions before the court.

- Examine and prepare witnesses at deposition, including subject-matter experts.

- Visit sites and travel around California for hearings and depositions.

- Act as lead or supporting trial counsel in the courtroom.

- Liaise with claims professionals, outside experts and clients while exercising sound independent judgment.

- Partner with legal support staff in a relaxed, collegial office.

- Comfort carrying a caseload of about 30 to 40 open matters with minimal oversight.

- Hands-on skill preparing case management orders, appearing in court and overseeing written discovery such as interrogatories and requests for production and admission.

- Practical deposition skills on both sides of the table, including with expert witnesses.

- Strong legal research, analytical writing and communication skills.

- A collaborative working style that fits a casual, mid-size firm.

- Willingness to commute to the assigned office each day and to travel within California.

- A resume that shows your full name and complete work history.

Bonus points

- Background defending catastrophic personal injury claims.

- Trial experience as lead or supporting counsel, or a keen drive to gain it.
