Leidos is seeking a Life Scientist II to aid biomedical research in the Environmental Health Effects Laboratory (EHEL) at the Naval Medical Research Unit Dayton, OH investigating the impact of various substances on military personnel in Operational and Non-Operational environments.

The successful candidate will work in inhalation and occupational exposure research studies and analyses to identify health effects before health and operational performance is compromised in the warfighter. Research efforts will require the collection and analysis of data, computer programming, statistical analysis, and scientific reporting. Performance of routine and non-routine set-up and maintenance of critical devices, to include the preparation of devices for specific research protocols, operation of devices during testing and data collection, routine preventive maintenance of devices, and data collection and recording from research conducted on the devices is integral to this position. This research supports the performance, resilience, and wellness of service members to optimize warfighter performance in the most trying environments.

The Challenge:

  • Work in collaboration with military and civilian researchers to coordinate and conduct research in the areas of warfighter health and performance.

  • Schedule and perform animal handling and data collection using appropriate animal use protocols.

  • Schedule and perform tissue culture maintenance, and cell and biochemical assays.

  • Assist the Principal Investigator (PI) and other life scientists/study coordinators with paperwork for animal use research approval and ensure compliance with rules and regulations (subject to final Government review and approval).

  • Execute sponsored and PI initiated research studies, including regulatory requirements, maintenance of files/study records and all activities associated with internal and external audits in coordination with the PI.

  • Maintain instrumentation, equipment, and laboratories.

  • Modify and plan research experiments, procedures, tests, or survey instruments.

  • Assist in research design and development of a study budget.

  • Assist with preparation for presentations and written published articles.

  • Monitor supply inventory and replenishment of stocks through established Command supply

  • Execute the integration, fabrication, modification, and functional testing of complex research equipment.

  • Maintain critical research devices to include the preparation of devices for specific research protocols, operation of devices during testing and data collection, routine preventive maintenance of devices, and data collection and recording from research conducted on the devices. Devices include various environmental exposure chambers, behavioral, physiologic and medical monitoring equipment, in vivo inhalation exposure systems, in vitro cell culture systems, analytical equipment for monitoring chemicals in collection devices, physiological tissues, and various exposure media (e.g., air, water, and feed), as well as instrumentation to support the investigation of transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics.

What sets you apart:

  • Either a Bachelor's Degree with 4+ years of experience or Master’s Degree in appropriate field of research, including but not limited to toxicology, biology, environmental health, biochemistry, chemistry, microbiology, and biomedical sciences.

  • Must be familiar with animal research rules and regulations

  • Must possess experience in animal research and handling techniques.

  • Strong attention to detail

  • MS Office Suite

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Ability to read and understand research protocols

  • Experience in conducting research

  • Must possess basic lab skills, including pipetting.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain Secret Clearance, priority may be given to those who already have this clearance

  • Due to US Government requirement, US Citizenship is necessary.

Preference give to those who have:

  • Experience in a military or medical research environment is highly desired

Pay Range:Pay Range $67,600.00 - $122,200.00

The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
