Job DescriptionThe Legal Head, Stanbic Bank Uganda is responsible for defining and driving the Country Legal Strategy, providing expert legal counsel to Executive Management and key stakeholders, and ensuring the effective management of legal and reputational risk across the Bank. The role provides strategic leadership to the Legal function, safeguarding the organisation's interests while enabling sustainable business growth and innovation. The role also interacts closely with the Standard Bank Group regional legal function.
Qualifications- Postgraduate Degree in Law from a recognised institution.
- Admission to practice law and possession of relevant professional legal qualifications.
- At least 15 years Post Qualification Experience (PQE) with more than 10 years' experience managing legal risk, providing legal advisory services and leading complex legal negotiations within the financial services sector.
- At least 5 years' experience in a senior legal leadership, legal counsel or legal management role, with exposure to wholesale and corporate transactions.
- Demonstrated experience in developing legal strategy, leading legal teams and managing legal risk within a highly regulated environment.
- Strong knowledge of financial services legislation, regulatory frameworks and corporate legal practices.
- Must meet the "fit and proper" criteria as defined by regulatory standards applicable to executive managers.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead and implement the Country Legal Strategy in alignment with Group Legal standards and the broader business strategy.
- Provide expert legal advice to Executive Management, governance forums and business leaders on complex, high-value and strategic matters.
- Oversee the management of legal, regulatory and reputational risks, ensuring that risks are appropriately identified, assessed and mitigated.
- Provide legal oversight and guidance on strategic transactions, including complex and cross-border transactions across business areas.
- Lead the drafting, review, negotiation and interpretation of legal agreements, policies and other legal documentation.
- Manage litigation, disputes and external legal counsel to ensure effective representation and protection of the Bank's interests.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with regulators, industry bodies, external legal practitioners and other key stakeholders.
- Drive continuous improvement, innovation and the adoption of legal technology to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the Legal function.
- Lead, develop and mentor a high-performing Legal team, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration and accountability.
