Legal Counsel – Construction & Engineering
Sedgman is seeking a Legal Counsel to join our Perth office. With a strong pipeline of multi-discipline projects across the Minerals Processing sector, this role offers the opportunity to provide legal services across the business, while providing technical leadership and mentoring to junior colleagues. This is an exciting opportunity to apply your expertise in a fast-paced environment, shaping innovative solutions for our clients.
This role will be responsible for accurate, commercial and timely legal advice to the organisation, whilst ensuring legal and contractual risks are managed through compliance with Sedgman’s contract and commercial guidelines. In this role you will develop and implement appropriate risk management strategies, assisting senior members of the team with day-to-day management of legal functions and compliance with reporting requirements and corporate governance policies.

Responsibilities
- Act as primary legal contact on assigned projects / contracts for construction and engineering law
- Provide high quality and practical advice on construction law matters to assist the business in critical decision making
- Provide high quality advice and guidance to the business on day-to-day legal matters
- Assist General Counsel and Company Secretary with ad hoc legal and governance requirements
- Assist in mentoring Law Clerks
- Comply with all lawful or reasonable directions from managers relating to HSE matters
- Report any incident/hazard that will or has the potential to cause harm in the workplace
- Use effective interpersonal skills in working with others to build successful working relationships
- Comply with legislative requirements, company policies, procedures and management systems
About You:
Qualifications:
Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor and current Practising Certificate
Essential skills, knowledge and experience:
- Minimum 4 years’ experience in construction and/or engineering law.
- Experience in construction, commercial and contract law, including negotiating and drafting of engineering, procurement and construction contracts.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Intermediate skills MS Office suite.
- Relationship building with our stakeholders.
- Negotiation & Influencing skills.
Desired skills, knowledge and experience:
- Experience in insurance law, dispute resolution and corporate law
- Some understanding of mining and mineral’s processing industries.
- Strong commercial acumen with the ability to influence at all levels.
- Time management skills and the ability to balance competing priorities.
- Previous private practice experience.
