The Opportunity
Cochlear has an opportunity for a full-time, 9-12-month fixed term contract for an experienced Legal Counsel based in our Sydney office. In this role, you will provide timely and practical legal advice to support our day-to-day marketing business operations and assist the Deputy General Counsel - R&D, IP & Global Strategic Marketing and other lawyers in the Corporate Legal Team to handle major legal projects, litigation, and compliance or governance matters.
Responsibilities include:
- Develop relationships within Global Strategic Marketing (GSM) to integrate legal services with operations.
- Review and approve advertising and promotional materials, claims matrices, and other communications relating to Cochlear’s products or services.
- Assist with marketing and other disputes and litigation, including drafting cease & desist letters and managing external counsel relationships.
- Manage product liability claims and assist with other investigation and/or litigation processes, including preparation of litigation reports for the Board.
- Draft and maintain customer-facing Terms of Use and respond to queries to ensure global consistency.
- Draft, review, and negotiate marketing and other agreements.
- Advise on intellectual property, advertising, and marketing matters.
- Manage legal risks including providing appropriate training to the business.
- Support process improvement initiatives and prepare/update legal document templates.

About You
As we grow our operations, we are looking for people who share our passion for delivering quality hearing solutions to our customers. To add value to Cochlear in this role, you’ll be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience:
- 6+ years Post Admission Experience as a lawyer at a top/mid-tier firm or top 200 ASX listed company.
- Qualified to practice law in Australia.
- Experience advising on Australian marketing and consumer law.
- Excellent analytical, communication, negotiation, and influencing skills.
- Exceptional judgment and the ability to make well-informed, risk-based decisions.
- Proven ability to draft and negotiate a broad range of business agreements.
- Litigation experience.
Desired Skills:
- Knowledge of medical device laws and regulations.
- In-house experience in the pharma/biotech sector.
- Intellectual property law knowledge.
- Experience working within a global legal team.
