We are seeking a junior Legal Counsel to join our lively and fast-paced legal team. The ideal candidate will be an admitted attorney with  a foundational understanding of corporate law and be eager to work on a variety of legal matters, including drafting and reviewing contracts, corporate filings, and providing legal advice. This position offers the opportunity to work closely with internal stakeholders to address their full spectrum of legal needs. Flexibility to work across a diverse set of global legal and non-legal professionals is essential. This position is a hybrid position with in-office and remote requirements. 

We understand the need to provide a flexible working environment partnered with team collaboration and socialisation. Therefore, we operate a hybrid working model with 3 days of working from home per week. This role is based in the  Johannesburg office. 

JOB FUNCTIONS: Job functions include but are not limited to the following.

  • Support the creation of all forms of technology and commercial contracts (customer, vendor, and partner) including drafting, reviewing, negotiating, and organizing legal documents.

  • Incorporate regulatory and legal compliance in all areas of practice, including without limitation, data privacy, anti-bribery, artificial intelligence, and ethical obligations.

  • Assisting in handling of data privacy matters.

  • Assist in disputes, complaints, subpoenas and litigation-related matters.

  • Provide legally sound guidance to multiple levels of the organization that appropriately weighs the legal risks and business needs.

  • Filing and maintaining standard corporate documents, such as registrations and insurance applications.

  • Other duties as assigned.

BACKGROUND / EXPERIENCE:

  • 2 years’ post-admission experience in a corporate legal environment, or in the commercial department of a recognized law firm.

  • Proficient understanding of legal and compliance principles, including contract interpretation, corporate governance, and regulatory compliance.

  • Self-starter who is able to operate with moderate oversight.

  • Strong research and analytical abilities.

  • Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities with a keen eye for detail.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to handle confidential information with integrity and discretion.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and legal research databases.

  • Comfortable liaising with various levels of legal and non-legal professionals.

  • Ability to properly prioritize competing deadlines.

MINIMUM EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from an accredited university.

  • Admission as an Attorney of the High Court.
