Position Summary:
Design user-centered, scalable experiences for athenaOne that simplify claim preparation, submission, and resolution workflows for clinicians, coders, and billers. Lead UX work within multidisciplinary agile R&D teams, partnering closely with product managers, engineers, analytics, and operations to define, prototype, and validate solutions that reduce complexity and improve user effectiveness. This position is based in Boston, MA and follows a hybrid work model. This role reports to the Experience Design Director.

About the Team:
The Product Design team focuses on creating intuitive, reliable experiences that enable healthcare professionals to work more efficiently and accurately. The team partners with product management, engineering, data analytics, and service operations to translate user research and performance metrics into design outcomes. We work within agile development cycles and use tools such as Figma, research platforms, prototyping frameworks, and analytics to inform design decisions.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Plan and conduct primary and secondary user research to surface user needs, pain points, and workflow constraints.

  • Synthesize research findings into clear problem statements, user journeys, and design criteria.

  • Develop and present product design narratives that build alignment across product, engineering, and stakeholder groups.

  • Design end-to-end, web-based product experiences and interaction patterns that scale across platforms.

  • Create detailed design artifacts — sketches, wireframes, prototypes, and specifications — to communicate intent and support development.

  • Evaluate existing products to identify improvement opportunities and measure impact of design changes using qualitative and quantitative metrics.

  • Make informed tradeoffs between scope, design fidelity, and implementation constraints to support timely delivery.

  • Facilitate feedback loops with users and cross-functional teams to validate solutions and iterate on designs.

  • Mentor and share design best practices with product owners, engineers, and more junior designers.

  • Integrate AI tools into design workflows by using AI to accelerate research synthesis, prototype generation, and usability hypothesis testing; assess AI outputs for accuracy and bias and guide the team on responsible use.

Additional Job Responsibilities:

  • Own information architecture and the end-to-end experience for a major product area.

  • Define high-level workflows and experience frameworks that guide Agile delivery teams.

  • Influence product roadmaps by aligning design vision with business and technical priorities.

  • Ground design decisions in user research, data, and success metrics.

  • Facilitate cross-functional sessions that build empathy for users and align teams around real-world needs.

  • Partner with Product and Engineering to ensure delivered solutions meet design intent and quality standards.

Expected Education & Experience:

  • 5+ years of professional UX/product design experience, including work on complex or enterprise-scale systems.
  • Demonstrated experience leading significant product design initiatives from discovery through delivery.
  • Experience conducting and applying user research to inform product decisions.
  • Proven ability to design scalable web-based interfaces and interaction patterns.
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional, distributed teams (product, engineering, analytics, operations).
  • Strong problem-framing, communication, and storytelling skills to drive alignment and decision-making.
  • Comfort making design decisions with incomplete information and iterating based on feedback.
  • Experience or interest in the U.S. healthcare domain and its workflows.
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments.
  • Portfolio demonstrating end-to-end design work, interaction design skills, and attention to detail.

Expected Compensation

$130,000 - $222,000

The base salary range shown reflects the full range for this role from minimum to maximum. At athenahealth, base pay depends on multiple factors, including job-related experience, relevant knowledge and skills, how your qualifications compare to others in similar roles, and geographical market rates.  Base pay is only one part of our competitive Total Rewards package - depending on role eligibility, we offer both short and long-term incentives by way of an annual discretionary bonus plan, variable compensation plan, and equity plans.
