Purpose of role
The Test Lead owns and leads the end-to-end testing and quality strategy for a tribe and its associated products or components. This role provides expert guidance across manual and automated testing methods and tooling, ensures quality is embedded from the outset (shift-left), and influences technical and architectural decisions from a quality perspective.
The role includes leading and developing a small team of Test Analysts to deliver robust, scalable, and high-quality software aligned to business outcomes and compliance requirements.
Reporting to: Engineering Manager with 2-5 Direct Reports
Key responsibilities
Test Strategy & Quality
- Own the end-to-end test strategy across Functional (TEST), Non-Functional (NFTS), and Process testing (PRTS), including automation and regression aligned to QA standards
- Provide guidance on methods, frameworks, tools, and best practices, ensuring effective adoption of engineering standards
- Influence architecture and design to embed quality from inception and proactively identify and mitigate technical risk
- Ensure alignment with quality assurance governance, regulatory requirements, and engineering standards
- Define and track quality KPIs (e.g. coverage, pass rates, MTTD/MTTR, escaped defects, performance SLAs)
- Champion shift-left and continuous testing, embedding automation within CI/CD pipelines
Test Planning, Execution & Assurance
- Review and approve test plans, test cases, data strategies, and automation suites
- Ensure traceability from requirements through to testing and defect resolution
- Oversee testing across system, integration, UAT, performance, security, and accessibility
- Communicate quality metrics, risks, and defect trends, providing evidence-based release recommendations
- Ensure environments, test data, and pipelines support reliable and efficient testing
- Lead test closure activities, retrospectives, and continuous improvement initiatives
Leadership, Mentorship & Collaboration
- Provide day-to-day technical leadership, mentoring, and support to Test Analysts
- Set quality standards, review deliverables, and support capability development
- Collaborate across teams on defect triage, quality gates, and release planning
- Represent testing in governance forums, architecture reviews, and programme discussions
Governance, Risk & Compliance
- Apply and continuously improve QA processes, including audits and corrective actions
- Incorporate non-functional requirements (performance, resilience, security, availability) into the testing strategy and sign-off
Decision Rights & Authority
- Owns: Test strategy, standards, test environments, test data, and quality reporting
- Recommends: Release go/no-go decisions based on risk and evidence
- Approves: Test artefacts, entry/exit criteria, and quality-related risk mitigations
Personal attributes
- Strong experience in software testing leadership or senior QA roles
- Experience with modern testing practices (automation, APIs, performance, CI/CD)
- Ability to define and implement scalable, risk-based testing strategies
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills
- Experience leading or mentoring team members
