As a QA Lead Engineer – Appian Platform, you will be the senior hands-on quality engineer responsible for defining and executing the testing strategy for enterprise applications built on the Appian low-code automation platform.

You will lead functional, integration, regression, API, automation, performance, and release validation across Appian applications while remaining hands-on with test design, automation, execution, troubleshooting, and defect analysis. This is an individual contributor technical lead role responsible for driving engineering-quality practices across the Appian delivery lifecycle and ensuring applications are scalable, secure, reliable, and production-ready.

Key Deliverables (Duties and Responsibilities)

  • Own the end-to-end QA and testing strategy for complex enterprise Appian applications.

  • Lead testing across SAIL interfaces, process models, Records, Data Fabric, business rules, workflows, integrations, APIs, Connected Systems, and data flows.

  • Develop comprehensive test strategies, test plans, scenarios, test cases, traceability, and acceptance criteria.

  • Remain hands-on with functional, integration, system, regression, API, end-to-end, and exploratory testing.

  • Design and maintain automated testing frameworks and regression suites for Appian applications.

  • Automate UI and end-to-end testing using tools such as Selenium, Playwright, or equivalent enterprise automation frameworks.

  • Perform REST/SOAP API and integration testing using Postman, REST Assured, or equivalent tools.

  • Validate complex Appian workflows including process routing, business rules, SLAs, exception handling, escalations, parallel processing, and asynchronous processes.

  • Validate Records, Data Fabric, database transactions, data integrity, data transformations, and integration results across systems.

  • Test Appian security including roles, groups, object security, record-level security, user access, authentication/SSO, and authorization scenarios.

  • Lead performance, scalability, volume, and reliability testing for business-critical Appian applications.

  • Partner with Appian engineers to review Health Check findings, performance issues, query/process behavior, and production defects.

  • Perform root-cause analysis for complex defects and work closely with developers and architects through resolution.

  • Define and maintain regression testing strategy across Appian releases and platform upgrades.

  • Validate application deployments and environment promotions across development, test, staging, and production environments.

  • Integrate automated testing into CI/CD and DevSecOps pipelines and establish automated quality gates.

  • Define QA standards, reusable testing patterns, automation standards, test-data strategies, and quality metrics.

  • Lead defect triage and provide clear assessment of severity, priority, release risk, and production readiness.

  • Provide release quality sign-off/recommendations based on testing results, defect status, regression coverage, and identified risks.

  • Mentor QA engineers and developers on Appian testing practices and automation.

  • Partner with Principal/Lead Engineers, Product Owners, Enterprise Architecture, Security, Risk, and business teams to ensure quality throughout the SDLC.

  • Strong hands-on experience with automation technologies such as Selenium, Playwright, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, or equivalent frameworks.

  • Strong experience with SQL and database validation, including data integrity, reconciliation, and backend testing.

  • Experience with performance and load-testing tools such as JMeter, LoadRunner, or equivalent technologies.

  • BS/MS in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent professional experience.

  • Appian Certified Associate Developer – Required

  • Appian Certified Senior Developer – Strongly Preferred

  • Appian Certified Lead Developer – Preferred

  • Current/active applicable Appian certification expected.

  • Additional Appian certifications and formal certifications in software testing, test automation, or quality engineering are preferred.

  • The QA Lead is not expected to function as the primary Appian developer; however, the individual must have sufficient Appian technical depth to understand application design, process models, data architecture, integrations, security, and platform behavior to independently lead testing of complex Appian solutions.
