About the Platform Governance Team
The Platform Governance team plays a critical role in ensuring the stability, performance, and long-term health of the BigCommerce platform. We focus on proactive measures, bottlenecks identification, tooling, and processes to maintain the integrity and scalability of our infrastructure and applications and platform in general. Our work directly impacts the experience of hundreds of thousands of merchants and millions of shoppers worldwide.
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Platform Governance Engineer with a strong focus on scalability and load testing. In this role, you will be instrumental in designing, implementing, and automating solutions to rigorously test the performance and resilience of our platform under various load conditions, with a particular emphasis on store performance, scalability and stability. You will work on cutting-edge tooling and processes to ensure BigCommerce remains a leader in high-performance ecommerce.
What you’ll do
Develop and maintain store generation tooling to create realistic and scalable test scenarios for performance and load testing
Design, execute, and analyze load tests using tools like K6 to identify performance bottlenecks and scalability limits within the BigCommerce platform, especially as it relates to store operations.
Automate metrics collection and reporting processes to provide clear, actionable insights into platform performance and load test results and ensure no regressions occur in a proactive and automated way
Collaborate closely with engineering teams to understand system architecture, identify critical performance paths, and provide data-driven recommendations for improvements
Contribute to the continuous improvement of load testing methodologies, tools, and best practices within the Platform Governance team.

Who you are
More than 6 years of relevant experience in scalability and performance testing, with a strong understanding of load generation, monitoring, and analysis
Education: Preferred Minimum Bachelor's degree in CS, EE, SW, CE, MIS; or equivalent experience or completed either a comprehensive software engineering boot camp
Hands-on expertise with load testing tools, specifically K6
Proficiency in at least two of the following programming languages, with a willingness to work across all three: Go, Scala, and Typescript
Experience with OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, ELK and strong are strongly preferred
Experience building and maintaining automation for testing, data collection, and reporting
Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., Google Cloud Platform, AWS, Azure) and microservices architectures
Experience with continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines

Exceptional communication skills, capable of articulating complex technical concepts to diverse audiences (technical and non-technical)
Demonstrates a high degree of drive and initiative, proactively seeking out challenges and solutions
Possesses a strong growth mindset, eager to learn new technologies, adapt to evolving challenges, and continuously improve
A genuine interest in and/or experience within the ecommerce industry, understanding the unique performance demands of online retail
Bonus Points
Prior experience in the ecommerce domain, understanding store operations, catalog management, checkout flows, etc.
Experience with other performance testing tools beyond K6 (e.g JMeter, Blazemeter, etc)
Familiarity with distributed systems and event-driven architectures

For candidates based in the Austin, TX Metro area, this role follows a hybrid work model, with three days per week in the office to balance focused individual work and meaningful in-person collaboration.
