As a Lead Software Engineer- Infrastructure at Commerce, you will be an integral part of our Infrastructure Engineering team. Our team consists of a talented group of individuals with expertise in web operations, systems administration and software engineering. We are charged with designing and creating the foundational technology stack that powers Commerce stores, while building the tools and systems that help engineering teams efficiently develop and deploy Commerce services.

We are seeking an experienced engineer who blends software engineering skills with developer operations. You might be familiar with this role as a “DevOps Engineer”, but at Commerce, we view DevOps as a philosophy - a set of principles that guide how we collaborate, work together and drive results for our business and customers.
Currently you will find us predominantly working in Golang, Ruby, and Scala, backed up by Terraform and Puppet for provisioning and configuration management. We are a remote-first team that values collaboration and prioritizes team over individual achievements, innovative problem solving, and operational efficiency.
What You’ll Do:
Maintain and improve BigCommerce’s Development Environment consisting of several containerized services
Manage cloud hosted VMs in Google Cloud Platform
Automate repetitive manual processes
Maintain up to date VMs
Document technical architecture and user features
Educate engineers on tool usage and possible process improvements
Assist in defining the team’s roadmap
Work closely with Engineers to gather requirements
Create and monitor statistics to observe tooling health and functionality
Work and collaborate with a distributed teams across the world
Join the team’s on-call rotation
Who You Are:
At least 7 years experience as an Infrastructure or Software Engineer
You’re a trusted engineer who has completed either a comprehensive software engineering, CS, CE, SW, MIS or equivalent degree, or has relevant work experience
Knowledge of configuration management systems such as Puppet, Chef, or Ansible (we use Puppet)
Experienced with Linux systems administration, including solid scripting skills (Ruby) and Bash
You have a solid understanding of modern programming and design principles
You write tested, maintainable code that you are proud of and you are committed to keeping code quality high
A good communicator who works well with geographically distributed teams
Excited to explore and engage in new languages, tools, and technologies
Contribute to project discovery, design, and implementation
Experienced in leading a project initiative
Comfortable working on several projects
Desire to work in a collaborative, open environment on an Agile team as a contributor and mentor
Highly proactive and results-oriented with excellent critical thinking skills

For candidates based in the Austin, TX or Atlanta, GA Metro area, this role follows a hybrid work model, with three days per week in the office to balance focused individual work and meaningful in-person collaboration.

Final compensation will be determined based on factors such as relevant experience, skills, qualifications and geographic location. We also consider internal equity to help ensure fair and consistent pay practices across our teams.
