Job Description:

The Role:

Entegris is currently seeking a Lead Scientist to join our Research and Development team in Fremont, California.

The Scientist / Lead Engineer in CMP (Chemical Mechanical Planarization) will lead the development, optimization, and sustainment of CMP processes used in semiconductor fabrication. This role requires deep technical expertise in CMP chemistry, materials interactions, polishing mechanisms, datadriven process engineering, and collaboration across multifunctional teams. The successful candidate will contribute to new technology development, process innovation, yield improvement, and technology transfer into manufacturing.

What You’ll Do:

Process Development & Optimization

  • Lead the development, optimization, and integration of CMP processes for semiconductor wafer fabrication.
  • Lead new methodology development, slurry selection and screening, pad evaluation, and consumables qualification.
  • Apply DOE, statistical modeling, SPC, and advanced data analytics to establish robust process windows.
  • Identify root causes and implement permanent corrective actions for process drift or variability.

Experimental Execution & Technical Analysis

  • Design and execute polishing experiments, metrology characterization, mechanistic studies, and slurry performance validation.
  • Analyze test data to extract trends, correlations, mechanistic insights, and improvement opportunities.
  • Establish operating specifications, process rules, and documentation to support R&D and manufacturing teams.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with integration, packaging, materials, metrology and equipment engineering.
  • Technology Transfer & Manufacturing Support.
  • Transfer CMP processes from development into high‑volume manufacturing.
  • Support process qualification, yield ramp, stability tuning, and cost‑of‑ownership improvement.

What We Seek:

  • Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in CMP process development and integration within the semiconductor industry.
  • Strong understanding of CMP fundamentals, equipment operation, and materials interactions.
  • Proven track record of successful process development and problem-solving in a high-volume manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with statistical analysis tools (e.g., JMP, Minitab) and data-driven process optimization.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced setting.
