Better is the first AI-native mortgage and home equity finance company, revolutionizing one of the largest financial markets in the world. We make home finance radically more transparent; using AI and proprietary technology to eliminate friction from the mortgage process through our industry-leading AI platform, Tinman®, and the first voice-based AI mortgage assistant, Betsy™. Our mission is simple: make homeownership cheaper, faster and more accessible by transforming how people buy and finance homes.

  • Better’s propriety AI platform makes us an award-winning lender:

    • Fintech Breakthrough Award 2025: Best Lending Innovation

    • Yahoo! Finance (2025): Best Online Mortgage Lender

    • Money Magazine (2025): Best for fast closing

    • Forbes (2023): Best Online Mortgage Lender

We’re building the future of home finance - and we’re looking for smart, driven, ambitious innovators who are ready to tackle the most impactful work of their careers.

The Opportunity

We’re looking for a highly creative, AI-native Lead Product Designer to define and elevate the future of the Better customer experience.

This is a senior individual contributor role with significant influence. You’ll operate as a design leader—owning complex product areas end-to-end, shaping experience strategy, and raising the bar for craft—while remaining deeply hands-on.

This role is ideal for someone who is:

  • Obsessed with design quality and craft

  • Excited by AI-native product experiences

  • Comfortable operating in ambiguity and building from first principles

  • Energized by fast-paced, startup-like environments

You’ll act as a bridge between product, design, and engineering—guiding direction while staying close to the work.

What You’ll Own

AI-Native Product Experiences

  • Design and evolve AI-driven user journeys, including conversational, assistive, and predictive experiences

  • Reimagine traditional flows (e.g., mortgage, refi, savings) into intelligent, goal-based experiences

  • Explore new paradigms for AI-assisted decision-making and user guidance

End-to-End Experience Design

  • Own complex, multi-step product journeys from concept through execution

  • Simplify high-friction workflows into intuitive, user-centered experiences

  • Design across web and mobile, ensuring consistency across all touchpoints

Creative Craft & Design Quality

  • Set a high bar for visual design, interaction design, and UX clarity

  • Deliver polished, high-fidelity designs with strong attention to detail

  • Push the team toward more creative, differentiated product experiences

Systems Thinking & Scale

  • Design scalable patterns across complex workflows and product surfaces

  • Contribute to and evolve the design system

  • Ensure consistency without sacrificing flexibility or creativity

Cross-Functional Influence

  • Partner closely with Product, Engineering, and leadership to shape direction

  • Act as a design voice in strategic decisions

  • Balance user needs, business goals, and technical constraints

Mentorship & Design Leadership

  • Mentor other designers through critique and collaboration

  • Help elevate overall design culture and standards

  • Act as a hands-on leader without direct people management responsibility

AI-Native Design Practice

  • Actively use tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Figma AI, and emerging technologies in your daily workflow

  • Leverage AI for:

  • Rapid ideation and prototyping

  • User flow exploration

  • Content generation and testing

  • Continuously experiment with new tools to increase speed and creative output

What You Bring

  • 6–10+ years of product design experience in consumer-facing digital products

  • Strong portfolio demonstrating high-quality UX and visual design craft

  • Experience designing complex, multi-step workflows (not just simple apps)

  • Background in startup or high-growth environments preferred

  • Proven ability to operate as a senior IC with leadership influence

  • Strong systems thinking and ability to work across end-to-end journeys

  • High proficiency in Figma and modern prototyping tools

  • Demonstrated use of AI tools in your design workflow

  • Ability to work onsite in NYC

Who You Are

  • Design-obsessed with a strong point of view on craft and quality

  • Curious and experimental, especially with AI and emerging technologies

  • Not overly tied to traditional or corporate design approaches

  • Comfortable working in ambiguity and building from first principles

  • Collaborative, low-ego, and highly motivated

Why This Role

  • Opportunity to redefine how people experience home finance through AI

  • Work on complex, meaningful problems with real user impact

  • High ownership and influence as a senior IC

  • Shape the future of AI-driven product experiences at scale

Skills Required

  • 6-8+ years of product design experience in complex digital products
  • Proven experience leading large, cross-functional initiatives from discovery through launch
  • Experience designing regulated, transactional, or multi-step workflows
  • Strong systems thinking and journey-level design perspective
  • Demonstrated ability to connect UX decisions to business impact
  • High proficiency in Figma and prototyping tools
  • Experience working in agile product teams
