Block is a renovation platform transforming the $500 billion renovation industry. Our mission is to enable millions of homeowners to create spaces they love and thousands of contractors to build thriving businesses. We're well on our way, serving customers from coast to coast with our technology platform and contractor network.
OverviewThis is the most senior designer on our product team. You won't be executing someone else's vision — you'll be shaping what Block's product becomes. From the first moment a homeowner imagines their renovation to the day their contractor finishes the job, you'll own how that experience looks, works, and feels.
Block is looking for a Lead Product Designer who will be responsible for shaping the customer-facing product experience for homeowners navigating one of the most complex purchases of their lives. You'll use AI tools to turn design ideas into working prototypes, contribute to production through pull requests, and build the design systems that make our product feel cohesive and intentional at every touchpoint.
At Block, designers use prototypes to explore and validate ideas—not just communicate them. Your ability to use AI tools like Claude Code, Cursor, and Loveable to go from initial concept to working prototype sets you apart. They're not a curiosity—they're core to how we design, build, and ship. If you've already been working this way, we want to talk to you.
This position reports to the SVP of Product & Engineering.
Responsibilities- Own the end-to-end design of customer-facing experiences—from early concept through shipped code
- Prototype in code using tools like Claude Code and Cursor. You'll go from rough idea to working prototype in hours, not days. Figma is part of your toolkit, but your instinct is to build something real before creating something static
- Collaborate closely with engineers in the codebase—iterating on designs, pushing pull requests, and working as a peer rather than a handoff partner
- Build and maintain our design system within our codebase — not just using Figma libraries
- Partner closely with Product Management and Engineering to shape squad goals, scope work, and deliver against our ambitious roadmap
- Advocate for the customer in every conversation — grounding design decisions in real user needs, not assumptions
- Contribute to design crits and product reviews, maintaining a high bar for quality and consistency
- 8+ years of product design experience, with meaningful time spent shipping code — not just handing off designs for engineers to build
- Comfort with modern frontend development—React, Next.js, or React Native. You don't need to be a senior engineer, but you can read, write, and push code with confidence
- Hands-on experience with AI-assisted prototyping—you can take a design idea and produce a working prototype in a single sitting. We'll ask you to show us during the interview process
- Systems thinking and surface-level craft. You about building scalable, maintainable design patterns and achieving pixel perfection on a single screen
- Strong product instincts and comfort working across engineering, product, and design to solve complex problems
- Experience building or contributing to design systems in code (component libraries, tokens, documentation)
- Comfort with ambiguity—you'll sometimes need to define the problem before you solve it
- Experience in a startup or growth-stage environment where you wore multiple hats
- Familiarity with home renovation, real estate, or construction
- A portfolio that shows code artifacts alongside design artifacts—GitHub contributions, shipped products, or projects built with AI tools
- Experience with accessibility standards and inclusive design practices
- Familiarity with our current stack (Next.js, TypeScript, React, Feathers, Node.js)
Our interview process includes a live exercise where you'll build something using AI tools. We want to see how you think, how you work with these tools, and how you make design decisions in real time. We're not testing whether you can memorize syntax—we're watching for taste, speed, and judgment.
Compensation & BenefitsBlock wants all employees to be supported in their personal and professional development, so we take a comprehensive approach to compensation and benefits.
- Earn equity in an early-stage high-growth company
- Subsidized health insurance, dental, and vision coverage
- Flexible work environment, with a hybrid schedule and "work from anywhere" time
- PTO and company holidays
- 12 weeks universal fully paid family leave
- 401k retirement savings plan with matching employer contribution
- HSA with employer contribution & FSA plan
- Budgeted learning and development stipend
- The tools you need to do your best work (including AI tool subscriptions)
- Working alongside an ambitious, kind, no-drama team

What We Do
Block was founded by Koda and Luke in 2017 on a simple premise: homeowners and contractors need a better way to build together. Looking at the $450 billion renovation industry, our co-founders saw how technology could dramatically change the way renovations are done from planning, through design and build.
Since then, we’ve completed over a thousand different projects, raised a significant Series C, built a network of best-in-class contractors, and developed a suite of digital tools to support every step of the renovation journey. A few things have remained the same since the very beginning: our commitment to connecting homeowners and contractors, our love of good design, and the importance of a culture of collaboration, tenacity, and creativity.
Why Work With Us
At the end of the day, it’s our team of ambitious, thoughtful, inventive problem solvers that has gotten us to where we are— and it’s our team that’ll get us to where we’re going. We're a tight-knit, collaborative group that works without silos or egos to invent the future of our industry.
