GENERAL OVERVIEW:

This job coordinates the receiving, processing and gross description of all patient tissue specimens sent to the laboratory for diagnostic evaluation and postmortem examinations. The incumbent provides technical support and onsite operational leadership for the gross room staff, manages daily workflow and monitoring quality indicators for the department and collaborates with pathology staff ensuring patient safety, quality processes and satisfactory customer service.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Examine and prepare surgical pathology cases for microscopic evaluation by providing gross description, dissection, and sections of each case as defined by the surgical pathology manual while maintaining accurate records of all activities.  (40%)
  • Instruct, assign and/or assist any gross room staff, including other pathologist assistants, pathology residents, surgical pathology technicians, lab processors, students in protocol for day-to-day laboratory functions. (20%)
  • Participate in and performs frozen sections, intraoperative consultations, autopsies, and perinatal procedures. File and retrieve surgical and autopsy materials and maintain accurate records of all such activities. (10%)
  •  Perform the proper operation, repair and replacement and preventative maintenance of area equipment and tools. Maintain record logs for the equipment.  (5%)
  • Organizes gross room workflow for efficiency and productivity. Define issues and problems in operations, identify solutions, and justify recommended solutions. (5%)
  • Assist manager or Supervisor with administrative functions as they related to the Pathologists' Assistant portion of the department including assisting with quality assurance monitors, quality control monitors, data gathering and preparations of QA report, input for performance reviews, budget preparation and monitoring, regulatory compliance and continuing education and training. (5%)
  • Establish and manage all grossing protocols and procedure manuals. (5%)
  • Assist with preparation of work schedules and definition of rotational responsibilities of staff.  (5%)
  • Provide input into the performance evaluations of staff members. (5%)
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.   

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 2 years as a Pathologists’ Assistant
  • Pathologists’ Assistant (American Society of Clinical Pathologists) certification or eligible. Certification must be obtained within 1 year of employment. (Incumbents in role prior to January 2009 exempt from certification requirement).
