Position Summary

The Lead Ophthalmic Scribe plays a pivotal role in leading the delivery of high-quality eye care services at our eye clinics or healthcare facilities by assisting physicians in their patients' eye examinations.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare patients for eye examinations, collect medical histories, and explain procedures.
  • Conduct visual acuity tests, tonometry measurements, refraction tests, and color vision assessments.
  • Operate ophthalmic equipment to perform diagnostic tests, including visual field testing and imaging (e.g., fundus photography, OCT scans).
  • Assist with contact lens fitting, insertion, removal, and patient education on proper use and care.
  • Proficiently use and maintain ophthalmic instruments, such as slit lamp biomicroscopes and ophthalmoscopes.
  • Educate patients about their eye conditions, prescribed treatments, and the proper use of eyeglasses, contact lenses, or medications.
  • Correctly summarizes and documents what the physician verbalizes during an examination, including but not limited to: proper charting of the examination, documenting additions to the chief complaint, assessment, and recommendations for treatment (including justification of decisions reached when appropriate).
  • Maintain accurate and organized patient records, including medical histories, test results, and treatment plans.
  • Follow strict protocols for sterilizing equipment and maintaining a hygienic clinical environment.
  • Provide support during ophthalmic procedures, surgeries, or laser treatments as directed by the physician.
  • Ensure ophthalmic equipment is clean, calibrated and properly maintained.
  • Collaborate with ophthalmologists, optometrists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient care.
  • May be required to work in Lasik, retina, glaucoma departments.
  • Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance in accordance with company policies and departmental scheduling requirements.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid and Active Driver’s License.
  • Scribe certification (preferably certified ophthalmic assistant).
  • Proficiency in all aspects of ophthalmic care.

Skills and Abilities

  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong supervisory aptitude.
  • Extensive knowledge applicable to ophthalmic care.
  • Comprehensive understanding of clinical processes.
  • Proficiency in treatment modalities and patient communication.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Highly organized with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Effective team player.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to travel between clinic locations as needed.
  • Must be able to walk and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Must be adaptable to frequent transitions between standing and sitting.
  • May need to walk up and down stairs.
  • Visual acuity for reading, writing, and typing information on screens and paper.
  • Adequate hearing for understanding inquiries and conversations.
  • Must be able to add support for elderly patients getting in and out of exam chairs.
  • Lift, carry and push up to 30lbs.
