Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) is seeking a self-driven and forward-thinking leader to join our team as a Lead Mechanical or Electrical Engineer.

You will work directly with R&D, manufacturing, and support teams to improve the quality and reliability of products and product assembly.

Development will include extensive knowledge of manufacturing processes, material properties, statistical process control (SPC), performing dimensional analysis, design of experiments (DOE), training technicians and production assemblers. You will be responsible for maintaining incoming material quality and partnering with suppliers to eliminate material defects. You will also manage a diverse team of technicians and specialists to support the quality of daily manufacturing activities.

As a Lead Mechanical/Electrical Engineer - Quality, a typical day might include the following:

  • Serve as a technical advisor to production operations; troubleshoot material, design, and assembly issues.

  • Plan, design, and implement tests to monitor quality. Analyze data to facilitate understanding of product defects.

  • Partner with suppliers to identify and eliminate the cause of component failures.

  • Drive improvements in product design, assembly, and component quality to increase product reliability.

  • Serve as subject matter expert in internal/external audits and certification activities.

  • Supervise, coach, and teach a cross-site quality team.

This job might be for you if you have:

  • A B.S. degree in Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience

  • 6+ years of experience in an engineering discipline

  • 2+ years of experience managing a team of technical personnel

  • Strong leadership, organization, and communication skills

  • Strong project management and problem-solving skills

  • Knowledge of quality tools and process improvement techniques (FMEA, Six Sigma, PDCA)

  • Knowledge/experience in any of the following:  design for manufacturability/assembly, tolerance studies, plastic and metal part design, Design of Experiments (DOE)

  • Experience using metrology and statistical methods

  • Ability to work cooperatively in a diverse team environment

Lake Zurich, IL- This position is located in Lake Zurich, Illinois, at our Fault Indicator and Sensor factory. Pay Range Data:

Lead Mechanical/Electrical Engineer - Quality, $115,290 – $170,349. Development Lead Mechanical/Electrical Engineer - Quality, $119,700 - $176, 890. We base our starting pay offer on location and job-related factors such as candidate experience, training, knowledge, and skills. Our ranges are determined by job, responsibility, and location.
