Job Description SummaryThe Lead Engineer – Mechanical Component will contribute to a team responsible for highly engineered equipment design of nuclear plant components. Mechanical Component Engineers create and develop design concepts, provide procurement support, and generate drawings, CAD models, specifications, and design basis documentation as required.
In this role, the Lead Engineer will operate in a matrixed engineering team to deliver high quality engineering deliverables in accordance with customer requirements, business procedures, and regulatory agency guidelines (ASME, NRC, CSA, and others). The Lead Engineer will work with a global team of GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GVH) partner organizations and suppliers to advance the BWRX-300 plant design and contribute to delivery of BWRX-300 SMR projects.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Execute the design, analysis, or evaluation of assigned projects using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and product / program requirements. This work would include mechanical and/or electrical engineering for all products
  • Includes direct people management responsibility including staffing and performance development. Utilizes in-depth knowledge of a technical discipline and analytical thinking and technical experience to execute policy/strategy.
  • Has knowledge of best practices and how own area integrates with others; is aware of the competition and the factors that differentiate them in the market
  • Uses some judgment and has some ability to propose different solutions outside of set parameters to address more complicated manufacturing processes with technical variety and/or interdependent production cycles. Uses technical experience and analytical thinking. Uses multiple internal and limited external sources outside of own teams to arrive at decisions.
  • Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience. May lead small projects with low risks and resource requirements. Explains information; developing skills to bring team members to consensus around topics within field. Conveys performance expectations and may handle sensitive issues.
  • Demonstrates ownership and accountability for cost, schedule, quality, and technical accuracy of assigned tasks.  Takes personal responsibility, understanding impacts and risks associated with design decisions. 
  • Considers customer needs and maintains open communication with interfacing engineers and project stakeholders.
  • Performs component design related work as governed by ASME Section III and CSA codes and standards.
  • Prepares CAD models, drawings, specifications, and detailed design basis documentation for nuclear component designs.
  • Interfaces with other engineering teams, project managers, project engineers, procurement, suppliers, and other business functions and partners as needed.
  • Understands component material selection & fabrication processes to create optimized component designs and address supplier non-conformances & emergent issues as needed.
  • Performs independent verification of design work ensuring strict procedure adherence.
  • Works closely with sourcing and manufacturing to support cost reduction activities.
  • Develops procedures and identifies opportunities to improve engineering productivity.
  • Works with technical leader to establish effective work plans, including time estimates, schedule estimates, requirements, and work processes.
  • Responsible for equipment requirement specifications and drawings, and evaluation & assistance in selection of vendors.
  • Performs fundamental engineering calculations and modeling.
  • Assessment of failure modes, causality, and risk in relation to assigned work scopes.
  • Participates in and leads teams assigned to address specific organizational initiatives.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or relevant engineering discipline from an accredited university or college.
  • 5 years mechanical design experience
  • 3 years of experience working in the nuclear industry
  • 3 years experience performing component design work to ASME Section III standards.
  • 1 year of proficiency with Autodesk Inventor 3D CAD design.
  • PEng. in Ontario or have the ability to obtain one within 6 months.

Eligibility Requirements

  • The REQUIRED work location is at the Markham Ontario office 3 days a week.
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 25% to domestic and international sites occasionally.
  • This role requires access to U.S. export-controlled information. If applicable, final offers will be contingent on ability to obtain authorization for access to U.S. export-controlled information from the U.S. Government.

  • Demonstrated problem solving ability and ability to perform complex engineering analyses resulting in thorough and complete documentation.
  • Strong interpersonal and proven leadership skills.
  • Strong communication skills and capable of clearly articulating specific technical topics or assignments.
  • Knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, vibration analysis, heat transfer, Finite Element Analysis, statistics, CAD modeling and drafting practices (including geometric dimensioning and tolerancing).

The base pay range for this position is $95,000 - $145,00 CAD Annual.  The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set.

This position is also eligible for a 10% performance bonus/variable incentive compensation/equity. ​
