The Lead Systems Engineer will be responsible for leading, guiding, and contributing to the systems engineering efforts for Stores Management Systems (SMS)—the safety critical interface between aircraft systems and stores (weapons, sensors, pods). This role provides technical leadership and assistance to project teams to ensure they deliver on cost, quality, schedule, and technical goals.
GE Aerospace is an industry leader in Stores Management Systems, with over 5,000 systems fielded worldwide. Our SMS solutions provide safety-critical store management for selection, arming, and release operations across diverse store types, leveraging the latest interface technologies.
Location: Grand Rapids, MI
This position, which offers a blend of onsite and hybrid work arrangements, is based in Grand Rapids, MI and necessitates a presence in the office for 2-3 days each week. An extensive corporate relocation package is also available for eligible candidates.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • In this role you will demonstrate leadership in communicating business goals, programs, and processes for Stores Management Systems.
  • You will utilize your experience or expertise to solve problems, develop and execute objectives for self and others, and have the ability to effect short-term and some long-term business goals.
  • Execute the design, analysis, or evaluation of assigned projects using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and product/program requirement.
  • Be responsible for System and Subsystem Level Design requirements.
  • Define and manage Interfaces to all sub-system in compliance to the system solution.
  • Work with Engineering Project Manager to generate and execute design review matrix and reviews.
  • Define System Validation Plans, execute System Validation Testing, and work with Test Engineers to ensure traceability satisfies the project's objectives.
  • Participate as a presenter or reviewer in technical and program reviews.
  • Take ownership of technical concepts, solutions, risks/mitigation plans, and engineering cost estimates on proposals.
  • Maintain broad awareness of technical trends to ensure technical quality excellence, timely completion of work, and reviews and responsiveness to customer/program needs.
  • Lead/manage interdisciplinary collaboration with software, hardware, test, safety, maintainability, reliability and certification teams assuring “cradle to grave” success.
  • Provide timely communications on significant issues or developments.
  • Travel up to 10%.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or other technical / science discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years hands-on design, implementation, integration, testing, verification and experience involving; Avionics Engineering Systems, Hardware / Software Engineering, and/or Electrical Design.
  • This role requires use of technical data subject to U.S. Government contract restrictions and this posting is only for U.S. Citizens.  GE will require proof of status prior to employment.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Self-starter with the ability to lead the effort with minimum supervision.
  • Experience working in systems including MIL-STD-1553, MIL-STD-1760, MIL-STD-2088, EBR-1553, RS-422/485, AS5725, AS5726, Discretes, and power interfaces.
  • Background in System Design and Validation on systems involving Microprocessors and Data Concentration.
  • Hands-on capability to handle test equipment (power supplies, o-scopes, etc.), data bus capturing tools, scripting languages (VAIS, Python, Visual Basic), source code (Assembly) and Excel data manipulation aspects (Condensing large amounts of information)).
  • Knowledge in Avionics Systems and Aerospace Operating Practices.
  • Understanding and translating customer requirements for applications development for software solutions.
  • Experience with DOORs Next Gen Requirements Management Tools, and RTC/Dimensions Defect Tracking.
  • Experience with System Testing Processes, Tools, and Automation.
  • Ability to implement customer and industry standards.
  • Ability to work in a cross-functional, global environment.
  • Ability to engage and build positive relationships with both customers and internal and external employees.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Prior experience managing or designing within an Avionics Design Assurance Level A Environment.
  • DO-297, ARP 4754A, DO-178, DO-254 and/or DO-330 process assurance experience.
  • Customer Technical Interface experience.
  • System Project Estimation and Bidding Experience.

This role requires access to U.S. export-controlled information.
