Lead Engineer – Mechanical Testing

Role Summary/Purpose:

Lead Engineer – Mechanical test Engineer is responsible for mechanical component/sub system testing. He / She has to define test requirements and equipment needed, work with engineering, suppliers on design and development of test equipment /systems, determine conditions under which tests are to be conducted and procedures to be followed and perform special, standard and non-standard tests.

Essential Responsibilities

• Translating the Engineering requirements into a Test requirement, development of specifications for lab test setup, Building the required test facilities and supporting the Validations of Engine, Electromechanical locomotive components and subsystems

• Design and develop innovative, scalable, flexible and test set ups, Test fixtures in the lab, Consistent with the Validation requirements of the product design teams

• Drive operational and execution excellence through innovative planning, resource engagement and close working with both local and global stakeholder teams.

• The individual will also drive synergies with external labs/partners to expand our capabilities beyond in-house capacity

• Work closely with site cross functional teams of EHS, Facilities, Compliance, Import/Export, Logistics etc to integrate lab plans as applicable for implementation

• Provide Estimates of the Testing Duration as input to planning Process.

• Hold design reviews for test plans & procedures, test results reviews and Document test results.

• Prepare invention disclosures to protect the technology that provides a competitive advantage to the business

• Test planning, test execution and report generation for the field test activity.

• Identifying instruments required for the field test and make addition in the inventory as needed.

• Instruments identification, calibration status check, packing and dispatch to customer location and return shipment upon test completion with the help of logistics team.

• Co-ordinate w/ direct customer for test execution & provide regular feedback to the team regarding the testing.

• Data processing for the test data and draw a conclusion within 2 weeks of test completion.

• Follow up with quality team for the timely calibration of test equipment.

• Provide test estimates, obtain P.O. for test services from customer, submit invoice and formal closure of test.

• In lab validation of equipment before sending to field,9. Data upload to designated servers under test request number

• Good knowledge of Reliability testing, Weibull analysis, Life predictions analysis

Qualifications/Requirements:

• Bachelors/Master’s degree in Mechanical engineering discipline from institute of repute

• Min. 8 Plus years’ experience in mechanical design, development and validation, preferably in the field of automotive / large bore engines/Locomotive Components.

• Demonstrated expertise in Mechanical system /sub system/ component validations

Strong understanding of Mechanical testing domain, ability to Design from fundamental physics /Engineering fundamentals and the application of the same

• Familiarity with Industrial Automation and Controls Development.

• Experience/familiarity in a lab environment with data acquisition systems, test instrumentation, industrial test laboratory environments and procedures

• Experience with sensors including accelerometers, strain gages, thermocouples, load cells, and microphones and transducers.

• Excellent oral & written technical communication

• Demonstrated initiative, resourcefulness, leadership, and interpersonal skills, with an ability to influence stakeholders, solve problems, and deliver results

• Ability to multi-task & prioritize effectively

• Team player with ability to work with minimal direction

• Strong organizational skills and prior success in working with cross-functional teams

• Commitment to Integrity & Compliance

Desired Characteristics:

• Global exposure with experience of working with global partners

• Proven record of demonstrated expertise in electrical component validation

• Design of test benches and rigs and for laboratory testing and prototype testing

• Advanced degree is a plus

• Demonstrated capability of leading projects and executing on time/quality/cost.

• Good hands on experience of instruments used for the field test ex: DAQ systems, sensors.

• Good knowledge of possible problems equipment may encounter and troubleshooting.

• Should be able to select instruments on their own for the required application.

• Hands on experience of instrumentation, cable routing, connection with DAQ, channel set up.

• Should have experience and knowledge in selecting appropriate sampling rate for the given application, various online processing techniques available in the DAQ.

• Should have good experience with performing component and system level tests for railroad application. Ex: modal test, noise test, vibration test, thermal test, pressure test, strain test, force test.

• Should have good understanding of the instruments like accelerometer, pressure sensor, thermocouple, displacement sensor, microphones, impact hammer.

• Should know various data processing techniques ex: filtering, fft, FRF, psd, rainflow counting, arcs counting.

• Travel- domestic 30%
