We are built upon a legacy of world-class additive manufacturing, jet engine design, and American-based production.
The Role
Lead the design, development, tuning, integration, and testing of gas turbine engine control systems. Develop control laws, software, hardware architectures, requirements, simulations, actuators, and FADEC/EEC systems. Lead engine and component test programs, design reviews, simulator integration, control system validation, and cross-functional coordination with propulsion, mechanical, aero, materials, and manufacturing teams. Document technical data and represent controls engineering with internal and external stakeholders.
Summary Generated by Built In

Beehive Industries is dedicated to Powering American Defense by revolutionizing the design, development, and delivery of jet propulsion systems to support the warfighter. Through the integration of additive manufacturing, the company aims to meet the growing and urgent needs for unmanned aerial defense by dramatically improving a jet engine’s speed to market, fuel efficiency, and cost.

Founded in 2020, the company is headquartered in Englewood, Colorado, with additional facilities in Knoxville, Tennessee, Loveland Ohio, and Mount Vernon, Ohio. Beehive is committed to grow and advance the defense industrial base while manufacturing exclusively in the USA.

Role Overview

Beehive Industries is looking for an energetic and driven candidate to design, develop, tune and test gas turbine engines.  The candidate should be someone who is familiar with engine control system software, hardware, and how they interact with the engine. This role will partner with various cross-functional leadership on a daily basis facilitating development and delivery of the overall engine control system.  The candidate will also develop control system architectures, engine controller schematics, and requirements in support of propulsion and power products along with representing BHI Controls internally with Systems Leaders and externally with suppliers, airframers, end users and governing bodies.

What You'll Do...

  • Execute the design, analysis, and evaluation of an aviation engine control system using gas turbine control laws and functional modeling/simulation. This includes setting software requirements, writing engine software code/creating block diagrams, analyzing test vectors, predicting and simulating engine operation with computer tools and component tests. Formally issue the engine control software under configuration control for an engine control system.
  • Execute the design, analysis, and evaluation of the hardware for an aviation engine control system. This includes setting engine control hardware requirements, designing actuators and pumps for the engine control, integrating and iterating with engine software design and analysis, predicting and simulating engine performance or control logic with computer tools and component tests, and formally issuing the hardware design for an engine control system.
  • Complete control law tuning in the time and frequency domain to achieve system response and stability metrics. Assess and modify control system models to match engine and actuator dynamics during testing.
  • Experience designing, procuring, and validating electronic engine control (EEC) and full authority digital engine control (FADEC) systems in addition to sensors, fuel systems, lube components, and other auxiliary systems. Lead software and hardware in the loop simulator design, commissioning and integration testing. Integrate engine performance and control system models into the hardware/software simulator to predict and validate engine performance and operability. Support setting software requirements and designs which enable the engine control hardware to meet requirements.
  • Lead engine system or component test programs from a controls software and hardware perspective. Set test objectives and limits, instrumentation and test data requirements, and test planning to validate the engine design.
  • Ensure the engine control system meets overall requirements from a design perspective. Coordinate with performance, operability, transient, mechanical and aero engineers to optimize the overall engine control system.
  • Lead design reviews and coordinate with other disciplines in design, performance, controls, stress and life, additive manufacturing, materials and system analysis
  • Provide timely communications on significant issues or developments
  • Assure proper documentation of technical data generated consistent with engineering best practices

You have...

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited university or college
  • At least 8+ years of experience in gas turbine engine control systems
  • Strong understanding of engine control software tools (i.e., NPSS, Matlab, Simulink, C/C++, etc.)
  • Strong oral and written communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills
  • Demonstrated problem solving ability and strong program leadership and execution skills
  • Proven self-starter and quick learner who can work in fast-paced cross-functional teams
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required. U.S. Citizenship is required, as only U.S. Citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

Nice to have...

  • Advanced degree in Engineering from an accredited university or college
  • Experience with Aero gas turbine engines
  • Experience working with additive manufacturing technologies and familiarity with design for additive manufacturing principles
  • Experience working with additive manufacturing technologies and familiarity with design for additive manufacturing principles
  • Passion for additive technology and willingness to challenge current design limitations to further exploit the benefits of additive capability
