Company Overview:

At Relativity Space, we have two audacious goals: to build the next great commercial launch company with Terran R and to become America's leading force in additive manufacturing innovation. Both contribute to our long-term vision of creating humanity’s industrial base on Mars, paving the way for interplanetary life to expand the possibilities of the human experience. This journey begins right here on Earth – where we design, build, and fly rockets to deliver customer payloads to orbit. Terran R, our medium-to-heavy lift reusable rocket, fulfills the growing demand for launch capacity, thanks to our iterative approach that accelerates design, testing, and development while minimizing costs. While our groundbreaking research and development in 3D printing pushes the boundaries of large-scale additive manufacturing.

Your journey with us is more than just a job – it’s an opportunity to shape the future of aerospace technology, additive manufacturing, and the human experience alongside a community of passionate, creative individuals. Join us on this extraordinary journey, as we work together to transform our vision into reality.

About the Team:

The Integrated Software team is responsible for developing a wide array of software across the entire company. This includes controlling the rocket from launch pad to orbit, providing real-time control systems for engine testing, structures testing, and launch facilities, and lastly (but certainly not least) creating our factory of the future with our proprietary 3D printing technology. This team is at the forefront of driving Relativity Space towards our mission of a multiplanetary future, from changing how we manufacture rockets to how we fly them.

About the Role:

Relativity is looking for a talented software leader to join a rapidly growing space startup. As a lead of Embedded Software, you will help build low-level software that is responsible for realtime monitoring and control of nearly all major electrical systems on Terran R. This lead will be responsible for growing and mentoring a team of seven embedded software engineers working on projects ranging from Autonomous safety systems, to motor control, to advanced battery management systems. The lead will need to coordinate with fellow software leaders to align on major milestones and system integration. The lead will also need to review and author software architecture designs, drive and evaluate trade studies, coach employees on many technical issues, and the team stays on schedule even when they encounter setbacks. Our mission is to reimagine the way rockets are built and flown. As the lead of the Embedded Software Team, you will help push us towards this goal by contributing in many areas.

  • Drive architecture, Design, and development of all embedded software from battery management to high speed sensors to motor controllers
  • Own, develop, and test embedded software from low level hardware drivers to realtime control and signal processing algorithms
  • Work with partner teams such as propulsion, GNC, Avionics, launch, etc. to define system requirements, interfaces, and understand system performance impacts of avionics designs
  • Make complex technical decisions such as risk mitigation, evaluation of trade studies, and anomaly investigations

About You:

  • Bachelor’s in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related technical field and 3+ years relevant experience in software development or Master’s with 1+ years of relevant experience.
  • 1+ Years of experience leading a team of multiple engineers or multiple examples of significant mentorship, coaching, and project management
  • 3+ Years of experience writing software for embedded systems in C/C++ or similar
  • Experience with software development processes including source control, bug tracking, and design documentation

Nice to haves but not required:

  • Experience developing, debugging, and shipping software products
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, plan, and execute on projects, roadmaps, and hiring strategies
  • Demonstrated ability to lead software teams that deliver on company critical milestones and objectives
  • Experience with Python, CMake, and CI/CD Pipelines
  • Familiarity with realtime operating systems such as VXWorks and FreeRTOS
  • Basic knowledge of electric circuits, integrated circuit datasheets

What We Do

A rocket company at the core, Relativity Space is on a mission to become the next great commercial launch company. Terran R, our medium-to-heavy lift reusable launch vehicle, will reliably deliver payloads to orbit on-time and on-budget for customers – meeting the needs of growing demand for space infrastructure. Leveraging the benefits of additive manufacturing to design, test, and iterate at a pace unmatched in the industry, we are changing the way rockets are built and flown.

Our long-term goal is to create humanity’s industrial base on Mars, paving the way for interplanetary life to fundamentally expand the possibilities of the human experience. The first step toward this vision starts here on Earth, by building the next great commercial launch company.

Why Work With Us

For 60 years, aerospace manufacturing has relied on fixed tooling and complex supply chains to slowly build rockets comprised of hundreds of thousands of parts. Leveraging advances in additive manufacturing, Relativity Space is strategically focused on reducing vehicle complexity, cost, and time to market.
