Purpose:
The Lead eCommerce Engineer provides hands-on technical leadership for a pod of engineers responsible for a major area of the flooranddecor.com online platform. This role blends deep full-stack engineering with day-to-day technical leadership — setting direction on design and implementation approach, ensuring delivery quality, and acting as the primary technical escalation point for the team.
The Lead eCommerce Engineer partners closely with the eCommerce Technology leadership to translate platform strategy into executable engineering plans, while remaining a strong individual contributor across React, Java, full-stack development, and large-scale commerce platforms such as Salesforce Commerce Cloud or WebSphere Commerce. This leader also champions modern engineering practices, including the responsible use of AI-assisted (“vibe coding”) development tools, to improve team velocity and code quality.
Essential Functions / Key Responsibilities:
Technical Leadership & Delivery
- Lead the technical design, planning, and delivery of features and initiatives for an engineering pod, ensuring alignment with architecture and business priorities
- Break down complex initiatives into well-scoped technical workstreams and guide the team through implementation
- Serve as the primary point of escalation for complex technical issues, production incidents, and cross-team dependencies
Full-Stack & Platform Ownership
- Remain hands-on across the full stack — React front-end, back-end services, and integrations — modeling best practices for the team
- Drive platform-level decisions on a large-scale commerce platform (e.g., Salesforce Commerce Cloud, WebSphere Commerce), including upgrades, performance, and scalability initiatives
- Partner with the eCommerce Architect on integration patterns, service boundaries, and technical standards
People Leadership & Development
- Provide day-to-day leadership, coaching, and technical mentorship to eCommerce Engineers and Senior eCommerce Engineers on the pod
- Support performance feedback, growth planning, and skill development in partnership with engineering management
- Foster a culture of ownership, quality, and continuous improvement within the team
Engineering Excellence & Practices
- Drive adoption of engineering best practices including code review standards, automated testing, CI/CD, and observability
- Establish guidelines for the responsible use of AI-assisted development tools, balancing velocity gains with code quality, security, and maintainability
- Lead root cause analysis and remediation for significant production issues
Stakeholder Collaboration
- Partner with Product, Design, QA, and Program Management to align technical delivery with roadmap commitments
- Communicate technical progress, risks, and trade-offs clearly to the Sr. Director, eCommerce Technology and other stakeholders
Minimum Qualifications
- 7-10 years of professional software development experience, with demonstrated full-stack expertise
- 1-3 years of experience providing technical leadership, team leadership, or acting as a lead/staff engineer
- Expert-level proficiency with React and modern front-end architecture, plus strong Java back-end development and architecture experience
- Experience leading technical design discussions, code reviews, and Agile/Scrum delivery at the team level
Preferred
- Deep, hands-on experience with a large-scale eCommerce platform such as Salesforce Commerce Cloud, WebSphere Commerce, or a comparable enterprise platform
- Experience leading platform migrations, replatforming, or modernization efforts on Salesforce Commerce Cloud, WebSphere Commerce, or similar enterprise commerce platforms
- Practical experience integrating AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code) into a team's workflow
- Experience with microservices, headless/composable commerce architecture, and cloud-native deployment (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
- Track record of mentoring engineers into senior and lead-level roles
- Strong communication skills, with experience presenting technical plans and trade-offs to senior technology leadership
- Performance – Genuine care about performance as a customer experience problem, not a checkbox. You measure before you optimize.
- AI-forward engineering – Comfortable using AI tools (Claude Code and similar) as part of your daily workflow, and excited to help the team build internal tooling that does the same.
