Analytica is seeking a Lead Data Scientist to support a mission-critical endeavor. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working directly with clients in consulting and delivery capacity to provide solutions that tackle complex problems. The Lead Data Scientist will support the agency’s mission to provide high-quality healthcare for beneficiaries and their families. The ideal candidate will work across different project workstreams to help identify vulnerabilities and provide analytic support to investigate special topics like the continuity of care as active-duty personnel transition to veteran status and VHA services. A successful data scientist will be able to think creatively about the data sources and analytic/coding techniques needed to solve problems, connect policy to the analysis process and interpretation. The data scientist must build algorithms that align with existing priorities and will encompass various algorithm types (such as rules-based and machine learning). Experience delivering analytic dashboard products is required, and experience with AI/ML or LLM methods is desired.

Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

  • Demonstrate experience working with military or veteran healthcare systems (e.g., DHA, VA), with a deep understanding of healthcare data, regulatory compliance, and mission-driven care delivery. 
  • Conduct ETL, exploratory data analysis (EDA), data wrangling to develop and present innovative ML algorithms to enhance healthcare system and collaboration.  
  • Apply ML techniques and time series forecasting for predictive analytics to support faster and more accurate healthcare outcomes.  
  • Design, develop, deploy NLP and AL/ML models incorporating unit testing, performance validation, and post-deployment monitoring to ensure reliability and scalability.  
  • Develop interactive, user-friendly dashboards and visualizations in Python, Power BI, and/or Tableau to support real-time healthcare analytics and decision-making.  Additionally, support QA, feature requests, and bug handling in existing Tableau dashboards.
  • Work with clinical and operational stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into meaningful, data-driven visual solutions.  
  • Enhance user engagement with dynamic, drill-through capabilities and actionable insights embedded with dashboards.  
  • Execute thorough quality control procedures to ensure high reliability, data integrity, and optimized performance of ML algorithms and dashboard solutions.  
  • Produce clear and comprehensive documentation, including business requirements, technical specifications and user training materials tailored to AL/ML and dashboard solutions.  
  • Develop presentation materials (e.g., PowerPoint summaries, technical briefs) to support algorithm approval processes and facilitate stakeholder communication.  
  • Maintain versioned documentation to support compliance, reproducibility, and knowledge transfer across teams.  
Education:
  • Master’s degree in data science, data analytics, statistics, computer science, health policy, public health, or related field.
Experience:
  • 8+ years of experience in data science, analytics, or statistics with a strong understanding of statistical, probability, and machine learning theory.
  • 8+ years of experience developing and deploying end-to-end machine learning (ML) solutions, including statistical analysis, forecasting, and predictive modeling.
  • 8+ years of hands-on experience in ML development, leveraging advanced algorithms such as Random Forest, Gradient Boosting (e.g., XGBoost, LightGBM), SVM, deep learning models (e.g., CNNs, RNN, LSTM, GANs, GNNs), and clustering techniques (e.g., K-means, DBSCAN), including autoencoders.
  • 8+ years of hands-on experience designing, implementing, and maintaining CI/CD pipelines to automate testing, integration, and deployment of data science and ML solutions.
  • 8+ years of experience designing, developing, and maintaining ETL processes for data integration, transformation, and loading across diverse data systems.
  • 8+ years of experience working in cloud environments such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform (GCP), including deployment, data integration, and scalable infrastructure design.
  • 8+ years of experience building, modifying, and extrapolating data dashboards (i.e. via Power BI and/or Tableau) fed by complex ETL processes. Demonstrated expertise in rapid iteration on dashboard feature requests and bug handling.
  • 8+ years of experience working knowledge of healthcare analytics.
  • Team lead experience—served as technical lead for a team of 5+ FTEs.
Technical Proficiency:
  • Proficient in programming languages: Python, R, SQL, SAS.
  • Proficient in dashboard development using Python and/or R.
  • Proficient in Git version control tools: GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket.
Soft Skills & Competencies:
  • Proven ability to communicate complex findings effectively to various audiences, including non-technical and technical stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to identify and solve complex business problems using data.
  • Ability to work with cross-functional teams consisting of data engineers, data scientists, business analysts, project managers, and stakeholders to develop and deploy data-driven solutions.
  • Proven ability to serve as a technical lead and mentor junior data scientists including the development and implementation of agile data analytics processes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to convey technical concepts and maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to manage multiple tasks and meet critical deadlines.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must possess or be eligible for a Secret clearance.
Preferred Skills:
  • PhD in data science, data analytics, statistics, computer science, health policy, or public health.
  • Proficient in dashboard development using Tableau & Power BI
  • Familiarity with MDR & M2 databases.
  • Experience with the Department of Defense or a federal healthcare entity.
  • Experience in the private healthcare sector.
