Are you excited about shaping how AI and GenAI are applied in a large, business-critical mortgage domain? As a Lead Data Scientist, you will set direction for applied AI solutions, lead use cases from problem framing to production and adoption, and help define the technical roadmap for Data Science, GenAI and agentic AI within the domain.
You will work hands-on, bring technical depth, strategic judgment and leadership. You guide data scientists within our domain and play a key role in raising the overall maturity of AI across the mortgage domain.
What you are going to do
With your solution-oriented and proactive mindset, you translate business challenges into scalable AI solutions that create real value in our mortgage processes.
You take end-to-end ownership of high-impact AI and GenAI solutions, from problem framing, solution design and experimentation to evaluation, deployment, monitoring and adoption. You ensure solutions are technically sound, reusable, scalable and effectively embedded in daily mortgage processes.
You work with modern AI capabilities, including foundation models, LLMs, agentic patterns, managed AI services and emerging model platforms. We currently use OpenAI and other AI services, and we expect you to help us assess which technologies are most suitable for each use case.
You act as a senior technical sparring partner for AI engineers, architects and product leads, guiding key decisions on solution design, model choice, evaluation approaches, scalability and responsible implementation. At the same time, you help shape the technical direction for Data Science and GenAI in the mortgage domain, translating vision into concrete choices and approaches. In this role, you also coach and mentor data scientists, strengthening both individual capabilities and the overall technical maturity and impact of the team.
What we offer you
You will join an ambitious AI environment where GenAI solutions are already being applied in production. You will have the opportunity to shape technical direction, contribute to NN-wide AI standards and reusable patterns and/or components, and learn from a strong community of around 90 data scientists through the Data Science & AI Guild.
We combine this with attractive employment benefits:
- Salary between €6,378 and €8,504, based on 36 hours, depending on your knowledge and experience
- 36 hours working week (if you want, you can also opt for a 40-hours working week)
- 13th month and holiday allowance are paid with your monthly salary
- 27 vacation days for a 5-day working week and three Diversity Days
- A modern pension administered by BeFrank
- Plenty of training and learning opportunities
- NS Business Card 2nd class, which gives you unlimited travel, also privately. Do you prefer to travel with your own transport? Then you can declare the kilometres travelled
- Allowances for setting up your home office and for internet use
We work in a hybrid model, combining working from home with two office days per week in Rotterdam, next to Central Station.

- Proven experience in leading, designing and delivering AI solutions in production, including work with LLMs, NLP and foundation models
- Strong understanding of the full data science lifecycle: from exploration and modelling to evaluation, deployment and monitoring in production environments
- Experience with cloud platforms such as Azure and/or AWS, including managed AI services
- Solid engineering mindset, with strong Python skills and familiarity with software engineering best practices
- Comfortable working with APIs; experience with developing APIs is a plus, not a must
- Continuous curiosity for new developments such as agentic AI and the ability to assess their relevance for real-world use cases
In addition, you have:
- At least 8+ years of working experience in a professional data and/or engineering environment of which at least 5+ years in developing and delivering AI or data science solutions
- Proven experience working with a wide range of stakeholders and influencing decisions based on technical expertise
- Experience in mentoring and coaching data scientists or other technical colleagues
- Strong communication skills, and the ability to challenge and inspire others
Who you will work with
You will work in a multidisciplinary team of Data Scientists, AI Engineers and a Product Lead, collaborating on the development of AI solutions that directly impact our mortgage customer journeys. Your team will closely collaborate with other product teams within the mortgage domain to integrate your AI solutions into the customer journey.
You will also be an active member of the Data Science guild, a community of around 70 data scientists across NN. Here, you contribute to knowledge sharing, define best practices, and collaborate on advancing AI standards across the organisation.
As a senior member of both your team and the wider community, you play a key role in shaping how AI is applied at scale within NN.
