Lead Controls Engineer
This is an on-site position in Grand Rapids, MI. Axis does not currently offer remote positions or relocation assistance.

Position Description: Lead Controls Engineers work with other Controls Engineers, Project Managers, Mechanical Engineers, Builders, Technicians and other personnel to quote, design, implement and document control systems for various types of automation and robotic equipment. You will be personally involved with electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic system design, simulation, PLC, HMI, robotic and peripheral device programming, machine debug and validation / buyoff as well as leading a team of engineers to do the same. Travel to customer sites for installation, startup, and support of equipment represents 10-20% of time.
Position Opportunity:
- Lead Controls Engineer: Substantial years of experience in Controls Engineering and Controls Design, with recognized technical expertise, ability to lead larger projects, interface with customers, support other team members, and be a self-starter. Experience in leading execution teams and engineering coordination.
Responsibilities:
- Lead both small and large teams on multiple projects concurrently.
- Develop electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic system designs of automated work cells.
- Lead assigned projects and direct project teams as well as monitor Controls timelines.
- Interpret customer specifications and communicate effectively to produce machinery that meets both customer and Axis Automation specifications.
- Follow customer dictated design and programming methodology.
- Ensure equipment meets industry safety guidelines.
- Lead Controls design and simulation presentations with internal team, customers and suppliers.
- Develop well-crafted code to provide automated machinery that meets or exceeds customer efficiency demands.
- Provide real-time debug and runoff support for automated machinery at Axis Automation as well as customer facilities.
- Real-time communication with company management and project teams on developments.
- Professional management of customer relationships and requests.
- Communicate with vendors to specify and source major purchased components.
- Ability to train and teach less experienced Controls Engineers and Co-Ops / Interns.
- Create and improve standards and procedures for the Controls department.
- Support build and electrical teams.
- Take project assignment and direction from Controls Engineering Manager.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in related engineering field strongly preferred
- 6+ years’ experience in a Controls / automation focused role
- Willing to travel domestically approximately 10%-20%
- Programming experience with PLC, HMI, Robot (pendant and simulation programming), Motion Control, and Vision Systems
- Design experience with electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems
- Preferred software experience: RSLogix5000/500, Studio5000, TIA Portal, FactoryTalk, Ignition, ProView, AutoCAD Electrical, Robot Studio, Roboguide, Motosim, Keyence, and Cognex softwares.
Estimated Total Compensation: $115,000-$140,000
