Summary Generated by Built In

RK is looking for a hands-on Lead Business Intelligence Developer to own reporting strategy, delivery, and governance while partnering directly with business and executive stakeholders. This role offers the opportunity to build RK’s Citizen BI program, mentor developers, and shape the future of the data platform alongside the Senior Reporting Architect. The ideal candidate will have strong Power BI, SQL, Azure, data modeling, and Microsoft Fabric experience and wants technical leadership without stepping away from the hands-on work.

RK Company Overview

As a second-generation, family-owned enterprise, RK Industries, LLC (RK) offers a diverse range of construction, manufacturing, advanced fabrication and building services. Led by Rick and Jon Kinning, RK represents seven distinct lines of business that work together to provide seamless project collaboration. Our exclusive building methodologies, accredited safety standards and professional execution allow us to turn our customers’ greatest concepts into reality.

Position Summary

The Lead Business Intelligence Developer is a senior technical and business-facing role responsible for the delivery and governance of RK's reporting and analytics solutions, working in close coordination with the Senior Reporting Architect on the overall strategy and direction of the data platform team. This person combines deep, hands-on expertise in Power BI and SQL Azure with the maturity to engage directly with business stakeholders, translate ambiguous requirements into scalable data solutions, and own delivery end-to-end. In addition to serving as the senior-most technical authority for report and semantic model development, the Lead Business Intelligence Developer owns and grows RK's Citizen BI Developer program, establishing the standards, training, and governance that allow business users to safely build their own reporting content on top of RK's enterprise data platform. This is a hands-on leadership role: the Lead Business Intelligence Developer is expected to design solutions personally, mentor and set direction for other Report Developers, and represent the reporting function in front of executive and non-technical audiences. Self-motivated and driven, always looking for ways to sharpen the team's skills and stay current with the Azure Data Platform, Power BI, and Microsoft Fabric ecosystems. An innovative thinker who is positive, proactive, and readily embraces change, with a goal-oriented attitude and a strong commitment to end-user satisfaction and data quality.

Role Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary point of business engagement for reporting and analytics initiatives — meeting directly with stakeholders (business analysts, developers, architects, business unit leaders) to define requirements and identify problem areas.
  • Own end-to-end solution implementation for reporting and analytics initiatives, from discovery and design through build, deployment, and adoption.
  • Establish, lead, and grow RK's Citizen BI Developer program: define governance standards, training curriculum, and a certification/enablement path so business users can build self-service Power BI content responsibly.
  • Define and enforce the guardrails between citizen-developed content and RK's enterprise data models, ensuring self-service work stays consistent with data governance, security, and quality standards.
  • Design, develop, and maintain data platform solutions to support reporting and analytics, and personally deliver complex or high-visibility Power BI and SQL Azure solutions.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to Report Developers and other data platform staff; act as the escalation point for complex reporting and data modeling challenges.
  • Work in close coordination with the Senior Reporting Architect on the overall strategy and direction of the data platform team, while owning execution and delivery of reporting and analytics initiatives day to day.
  • Partner with senior architects and business stakeholders to shape the roadmap for reporting and analytics, considering business requirements, sizing, infrastructure, data protection, security, and recovery.
  • Present recommendations, designs, and solutions clearly to both technical and executive/non-technical audiences.
  • Set and enforce the team's methodology, processes, and standards to ensure delivered solutions are of the highest quality.
  • Create and maintain relevant technical and program documentation, including Citizen BI program governance materials.
  • Implement security measures to protect sensitive data and ensure compliance with data privacy regulations.
  • Stay abreast of technology and industry changes, especially in Cloud, Data Analytics, and self-service BI enablement.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must have a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Technology, Computer Information Systems, Computer Applications, Engineering, or equivalent, plus 8-15 years of proven field experience in data engineering, reporting, or analytics.
  • 8+ years of experience advising on, managing, and successfully delivering technical solutions, including direct business stakeholder engagement and requirements gathering.
  • 5+ years of expert-level experience with Power BI (Power Query, DAX, Data Management Gateway, SSAS Tabular Connector), including semantic model design for enterprise consumption.
  • 8+ years' experience in industry working as a data engineer or analytics professional related to data integration, data modeling, analytics, and reporting, and/or Azure or AWS cloud solutions.
  • 5+ years' experience with Microsoft SQL Server environment using SQL, T-SQL stored procedures, T-SQL functions, or a Postgres environment using PostgreSQL and PL/pgSQL.
  • 5+ years' experience advising on, managing, and successfully delivering data solutions.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, launching, or leading a self-service/Citizen BI governance program, including training, standards, and enablement for non-technical, business-facing developers.
  • Proven track record owning solution implementation end-to-end — from business requirement through deployment — without requiring hand-off to another lead.
  • Experience mentoring, coaching, or providing technical leadership to other developers or engineers.
  • Strong executive presence and communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical audiences and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with Microsoft Fabric, including OneLake or other Fabric workloads, with the ability to evaluate and apply these capabilities to expand the Citizen BI Developer program.
  • Experience in at least one Data Modeling discipline (e.g., Enterprise Data Warehouses, Star Schemas, etc.):
    • Master Data Services and Data Quality Services
    • Custom Data Integrations
    • Data Migrations
    • Data Governance

    • On premise solutions (SQL Server, SQL Server Reporting Services, SQL Server Integration Services, .NET solutions, Active Directory)

Accountability

  • Comply with all company policies and procedures.
