Lead Backend Engineer, Help Experience

As a Lead Backend Engineer, you’ll combine hands-on backend engineering with technical leadership. You will own critical services end-to-end, lead the design of new capabilities, and help raise the bar for engineering quality and impact across your team and domain.

A key focus of the role is evolving the infrastructure that orchestrates automated support conversations—building scalable, reliable services that connect conversational interfaces with the internal systems that help members resolve issues. In this position, you’ll:

• Build systems that help millions of members resolve issues quickly and effortlessly, shaping the support experience on a platform used by 100+ million users.
• Design and evolve backend services that power conversational support, enabling intelligent interactions between members and our platform.
• Drive architectural evolution and shape the system architecture to increase team autonomy and long-term scalability.
• Develop and operate distributed systems using a modern backend stack including Golang, Vitess, Redis, Kafka, Vespa, and Temporal
• Advance our customer support chatbot, building capabilities that help members resolve problems faster.
• Transform our backend service that powers our customer support chatbot into the central orchestration layer for support conversations across the marketplace.
• Build observable, reliable systems, instrumenting services using OpenTelemetry and monitoring them through Grafana, and Kibana.
• Shape the technical direction of the team, partnering closely with your Engineering Manager and Staff Engineer while mentoring other engineers.

• Backend Engineering Expertise: You have several years of experience building backend systems in production environments and have developed strong knowledge across multiple high-level programming languages. You bring deep expertise in Golang, while experience with Ruby is a plus.
• Systems & Architecture Thinking: You have experience designing and evolving complex backend systems and can balance short-term delivery needs with long-term scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
• Pragmatic Problem Solving: You approach technical challenges with a practical mindset, focusing on solving the right problems while avoiding unnecessary complexity or over-engineering.
• Technical Leadership: You are able to drive important technical initiatives and influence architectural direction, helping teams navigate system evolution and technical improvements.
• Mentorship & Knowledge Sharing: You actively support other engineers through mentorship, collaboration, and knowledge sharing, contributing to a strong engineering culture.
• Curiosity for Emerging Technologies: You are excited to learn and master new technologies and concepts. Experience leveraging AI and LLMs in production environments—such as chatbots or search systems—is a strong plus. You actively embrace AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor) as part of your engineering workflow.

The salary range for this position is €6,542 - €8,842 gross per month.
